What’s a good rod for situation?

Featured Replies

Hey guys.  I fish a lot of top water above weeds and lily pads quite heavily and have had a lot of success.  My question to you is this... when I use top water frogs and such over heavy weeds that just breach the surface,  I use 40lb braid.  I feel like the braid may be to heavy for my rods, but I want a rod that will fit this.  I also use jigs in these areas too.  I snapped a tip off one of my rods with this setup.  It was a bass master 7 foot medium heavy action rod.  Any suggestions on something better, more durable, for the 40 lb braid and top water/jigging weeds?  Thanks in advanced!

I use a 7'2 H fast action, as for rod brand or model, tons of options to be had.

Can you clarify the H?  I’m sorry, I just started expanding my horizons past worm fishing, and I’ve been learning more about rods, reels, line, lures etc

H = Heavy..I also use a H/F..Heavy Fast action, in a 7'4" mainly for frogging, but will work for other techniques as well.

It would be helpful if you gave us an idea of the budget you have for a new rod.

I’d rather not spend more than $100 if I could get away with it

You've got gobs and gobs of good options below $100. Especially for topwater presentations like you mention. Rod price goes up concurrent with sensitivity (and brand name, but fish can't read the logo on the blank), of course, but I don't see a topwater situation in which you're going to struggle to detect a strike.
