Been looking around on $99 spinning reels and I found the Daiwa eliminator and daiwa exceler the most interesting reels but i have some concerns about both the first one being on the eliminator it has a giant spool with such a small gear and i worry the gears might wear out quickly by just reeling as this has happen before on my reels with a heavy spool(if you don’t know what gear im talking about its the one under the main gear which makes the spool go up and down) the second concern is on the exceler which has a carbon frame and i think it might break under heavy load when striper fishing.Which one do you guys think i should get and why

I own 3 2500d-xh excelers. they are nice reels for the price.

in regards to breaking a carbon frame, I don't think you can set the drag tight enough to put that kind of strain on it. max drag setting is 22 pounds.

I caught a 15 pound flathead on one, while bass fishing. it handled it easily.

If you're going to mainly striper fish, I would choose the eliminator, since it has a aluminum frame. Or the BG series. Both the eliminator and BG share the same frame. I think the exceler frame might flex on you with the way stripers run. You can't go wrong with a aluminum frame.

I have the Eliminator, it is basically the BG line so is just fine for Stripers.

Like Russ, I own and fish two 2500 Excelers and have nothing bad to say about them. I fish smallies on St Clair so they get tested. I have no experience with the Eliminator.

I can only add that I had a 2500 Exceler for 14 years and when I traded it on in a new Sahara 3000 HG last year it was still in perfect condition after hauling a ton on LM out of the tidal Potomac grass beds.  I used BPS Excel 8lb mono on it the whole 14 years.  I thought it was a great reel.  I bought it and a Daiwa 2500 Capricorn within 30 days of each other.  I still use the Capricorn and it is going strong.  As I recall they were basically the same reel except for the digi gear feature.

Yes I do.

I guess you could call Daiwa and make sure the gears are the same as the BG which has a good rep if your concerned about it.

Interesting how they say the daiwa has oversized gears which are different from the exceler but lots of people say they are the same but maybe it’s just some marketing sceme?

The gears on a spinning reel are ro take up the line that you cast retrieveing lures..thats it reeling with fish on is not what they are intended for...
