Curado 70 to cast pop x?

Featured Replies

Ok this had likely been covered somewhere but I’m going to bite the bullet and try a megabass pop x finally.  Weight posted online is 1/4 oz.   I’d like to use it with my curado 70 with gloomis cr722 Imx combo. Could easily use a spinning rod too.   But I love this casting combo for topwater.. just have never gone quite that light lure on it. I will of course try it for myself but just curious if any opinions or experiences with Pop x or similar on casting gear/curado 70 before I do.

Not sure how the rod will do with 1/4 but the 70 is more than capable of throwing that weight.

Do you have any other 1/4oz lure to try it with?

The Curado 70 will handle it very well. Your rod and line will be the limiting factors.     jj

I’ll give it a shot with a Zara puppy or something with similar weight.  Thanks for the input was pretty sure it would be ok, rainy day here stuck inside and was just curious what others thought or used to throw pop x or similar

That's not even that light weight.  I cast 1/10 oz Teeny Wee Pop Rs on casting gear.

Do you cast 1/10oz with stock curado 70 and the rod mentioned? I think OP ask specifically for this reel. I can say, I cast 1/16oz LC snackys on casting gear, oh and on curado 71, but that not gonna help OP either.

To OP, the 1/4oz is in limit of curado 70, especially POP-X which have better weight transfer system than comparable lure weight. As @jimmyjoe mentioned rod and line is also playing a big roles too. I usually use M/F Rod with soft tip and moderate fast to fast(lure weight 1/8-3/8, comparable to ML). Line not bigger than #6-8 Izorline.

I checked you rod spec 1/4-5/8oz that seem a little too stiff for 1/4oz lure and with 6’ length gonna be tough to get some distance and accuracy. Even you can cast out but the action of lure would be pulling instead of popping due to stiff rod.

Now I never use IMX rod but I have two Shimano crucial both Medium/Fast but one with lure weight 1/8-3/8 CRC-D66M and another with 1/4-1/2 CRC-66M.

Ok cool thanks again.  I’ll give it a shot and see.  I think it should likely be ok but I’m interested to see if the CR722 is too stiff to “pop” the pop x. Will be some trial and error but in the end hoping the pop x lives up to the hype no matter what rod I throw it with

I've come to the conclusion that 1/4 oz. is the low end with casting tackle even with shallow spools. Yes, I can cast lighter weights but it requires a measure of focus. That focus takes away the focus on my fishing. Here I believe spinning excels.

For me if goes below 3/16, that push a limit of Curado 70. It still can be done with appropriate rod but distance and accuracy suffer way down. And you are light about measure of focus, either you fixing too many backlash or trying to do perfect cast, the main fishing goal is kind off wash off.

Thanks to my left frozen shoulder late last year, I turn myself to use more and more spinning for both Finesse and Ultra light. I’m having fun with it. Don’t worry about perfect cast or how light my baitcaster can cast, focus more on fishing and presentation. I even feel the spinning (the way we hold it) give more natural movements with make better presentation compare to baitcaster.

I might be only a few, that get away from BFS to spinning. I’m done with “I can do it” or it look cool. I focus more on fishing and better presentation to get fish to bite.

I will say that I am very late to the Curado 70 party and just picked one up for the first time this year on clearance.  It has really impressed me and has very quickly become a favourite.  Almost no backlash issues, casts a mile and the size fits me just perfectly. I was missing out by not having one sooner.   Now that I think about it I was casting a 4” wacky senko on this combo no problems and that can’t weight much more than 1/4 ounce

I have a SLX reel and  a Pflueger Asaro reel and they both cast a 1/4oz Zell pop or G Splash with ease on a 6"4" All Star medium rod 1/4-5/8ths rod on 10lb line. So a Curado 70 should bomb them.

Now I have thought of buying the MGL spool as an upgrade to that SLX just to see how much better it could be, but it is ok in stock form.
