And no, I'm not talking about life vests.  I'm talking about a few items that nobody mentions.  Watch the video to see what they are.

btw, this JUST happened: https://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_123/PLB-rescue-81820.html

Nicely Done Glenn ~

I carry Signal flares & a PLB Personal Locator Beacon.

While not a 'requirement', can be the difference between life & death.

Sounds dramatic but it's the truth.

I've seen it.

All good points....and wear your kill switches. I don't think that one was mentioned.  I put it right up there close to a life jacket.

Great tips Glenn.  I was once stranded on an 18ft runabout about 6 miles off shore from LI, NY with my Father, the motor wouldn't start and there was a storm coming fast.  I didn't know it at the time but my had a device he had seen at a Coast Guard show and it was a distress beacon.  Within minutes the CG showed up and towed us in as the storm was hitting,

I'm a believe, it is cheap insurance to fish another day!

In the Marine Corps, whenever we were on the flight deck of Navy vessel, we used something called a 'float coat' (real name is the MK-1 Inflatable Life Vest).

While I'm not advocating for the use of float coat, we can make use of some of the gear that was on them.

  • Automatically and manually inflatable
  • Strobe light
  • Whistle
  • Flourescent green dye marker

We can also include other features like the PLB and a good flare kit

I had a near mishap a few weeks ago on Lake of the Ozarks about 30 minutes after sunset where a much larger vessel coming out of party cove nearly ran head on into me. All nav lights were on, I was the stand on vessel, was going under 30 mph, but that boat just kept on coming at me. It wasn't until the very last moment that the driver of the other vessel veered hard right to miss us...

I appreciate Glenn posting about this. It's good to be reminded how important safety is out on the water. We can very easily become comfortable out there and start letting our guard down. Thanks for the info on the PLB Glenn!

Just ordered and picked these up to day from Cabela's in Saginaw . Plan on hitting Saginaw bay Sunday.  In Michigan if your boats over 16 feet and going more than a mile off shore on the Great Lakes you need radio, flares, fire extinguisher, and life vests With whistles on them.

you do t need all of that for the inland lakes but, it is nice to have

I need to pick up a new fire extinguisher today as I think the one that cane with the boat has 1984 stamped on it

I'd fish with you, you are a smart guy.  And I always have my own vest and radio.

Thanks for the support guys. I really wasn't expecting much interest in a "boring" safety video, but nonetheless felt it important that I make one.  I hope it's inspired you to make improvements with your safety gear, whether you fish from a boat or from the shore.

Thanks!

Glenn
