Removable casting deck for 12' jon boat?

Featured Replies

i have a 12' jon boat with a 4hp yamaha and i would like to put a casting deck on it. But i also use it for duck hunting and want to make it removabe for hunting. How should i do this?

Casting deck on a 12fter sounds a little tipsy... I would be careful to not raise your center of gravity too high.  If I were going to do one I would probably just form a deck to several sturdy posts that fit either fit nicely into brackets or are secured down in some other fashion.  If one piece is too much you could always make it in two or three sections.

I too have a 12 footer.  Please update with picture if you are going ahead with this project.

Thanks

Just use 2x2 to go across the front two seats, cut out the plywood to fit into your boat and secure the plywood to the 2x2's by screws, just don't secure to the seats and it is easily removable.

I did exactly what you are talking about on my 12' fiberglass. It isn't tipsy at all. I can't post pics cause I'm new though. Someone remind me soon and I'll try to post some.

Here's the removable casting deck I put in my 14' jon. I kept it low to try to keep my center of gravity low. 4 years on the water and no complaints.

I had an Alumacraft 1236 jon boat for about 15 years and no way would I put an elevated deck on it.

Here is a tip for you to try before doing it. Take it out fishing and stand on the tank seat and fish for a while. If you feel secure, then do it.

That is a good idea.  Putting a removable rise floor between the seat.  I will give that a try however, I will set the seat a little farther back instead of center.  Do you have you TM mount in the front or back?  If it is in the front, do you have picture?

Thanks

Here's the trolling motor. It's a cheap hand controlled transom mount that I flipped the head on and mounted up front. I kept the seat centered to leave some casting distance between me and the guy in back...plus I needed to be able to reach the TM. If I had a foot controlled TM, I might have done it differently.

One thing to keep in mind anytime dealing with aluminum and plywood or any treated wood is: several years ago many "treated" wood processes changed. Much of the pressure treated woods now contain a type of copper chemical. Constant contact between this wood and aluminum causes corrosion that will eventually eat thru the aluminum. Untreated lumber or "marine" grade plywood is the best way to go.
