How to remove 5200

Featured Replies

I have a lot of left over 5200 on my skiff where a second console used to be. I am having a hard time getting this stuff the boat. Anyone have any tricks to get this stuff off the boat?

Dumb question... what is 5200??   If its an adhesive I recommend a break up solution such as goo-gone or one of those spray industrial type.  Just make sure they dont hurt your coating first.  Work that stuff in conjuction with a steady applied heat from a hair dryer and use some type of rubber scraper, like youd use in the kitchen.  I havn't found an adhesive that I can't take off with that approach.  If 5200 is not an adhesive... sorry for the waste of time.

Its a 3M adhesive.

Anti-Bond 2015 made by JWB Environmental. Just be sure it won't harm the paint.

That stuff is impervious to just about every chemical.

A sharp chisel or scaper.  If worse comes to worse, carefully grind it off with a sanding disc or belt sander.

There may be chemicals which will remove it, but the only sure method I know of is physical removal, once it has hardened/set.

That stuff will bond two pieces of wet wood.  If I recall, it will actually set faster underwater.  Air slows the process.

Here's a product that might do the job.

I scrape heavy part off and then use MEK to get the thin film that's left. I actually think the MEK is just working as something to keep it from sticking back and the rag full of elbow grease is what's taking the silicon off because it's still a little work, but's it's the best process I've found.

There is a note on the tube"Not recommended as a deck seam sealer on teak decks because it may be permanently softened by teak cleaners"

Try some teak cleaners, LOL
