Frog and Texas Rig

Featured Replies

So I’ve been a rather one trick pony with my fishing, but very good with my one trick in slinging a Texas rig. I’ve done well in just about every season and condition with it and is usually my go to.

Ive been working on other techniques for different situations and been improving using a frog. My question to y’all is if you were working a prime area and wanted to work high percentage cover with both the frog and the Texas rig, what would you lead off with and what would be the follow up?

It it makes sense to me to work both techniques in those areas, appealing to aggressive and passive bass but wanted to get yalls thoughts on it.

Providing you can get the trig down into the cover, toss the frog first. If you get short strikes, i.e. blow ups but no hook ups, then throw the t rig in the same spot that you threw the frog.

How would you react if the frog drew no interest?

Would you still work the Texas rig behind it?

I would. My first thought would be to toss a jig & craw type bait in there. Might take trying more than 1 type of bait to get the fish to bite. This is why they call it fishing, and not catching..?

1) Frog

2) Texas Rig

I prefer a topwater bite when I can get it, the Texas Rig makes a great following bait if the miss my frog or if the just aren't interested

Thanks guys.  Confirms what I was thinking.

95% of the time, if I am throwing a frog in an area, I can't fish it well with a Texas rig because I am targeting grass (heavy grass) almost exclusively. When I do throw it in an area where I can fish a Texas Rig like standing timber, I will lead off with the frog and fan cast the area well hoping to get a blow up near the isolated stumps. If I feel like the area is holding fish, I will pick it apart with a Texas Rig.

I’ve actually done better with a frog in places that I typically throw and catch on a Texas rig. Obviously I can put the frog places I couldn’t a Texas rig but that’s the reasoning for my question.
