Which rod is best for nedrigs, drop shots, and other small presentations?

Featured Replies

Greetings all. I recently bought a St. Croix Mojo Bass (7'1" MF) and love it for jerk baits which is what I mainly fish with. I feel it's a bit too stiff and heavy for smaller presentations though where more sensitivity is needed. I'm looking at getting a ML rod for this type of fishing and have narrowed it down to a couple of options. Could you please let me know which you think would be best for fishing smaller softplastics? I'd like to stick to St. Croix rods as I like what I have and would like to experiment with them a bit more. The Mojo Bass I have is great and I'm not sure if the Avid X is worth the extra money or if the Bass X is good enough at the lower price. Thanks.

St. Croix Avid X 6'6" MLF

St. Croix Avid X 6'9" MLXF

St. Croix Avid X 7'0" MLF

St. Croix Mojo Bass 6'10" MLXF

St. Croix Bass X 6'10" MLXF

I have and use a SC legend extreme 7’ MLF for dropshot and Ned. My buddy prefers his Avid MLXF rod. I use 6 and 7 lb Sniper so I like having a more parabolic action of the MLF St Croix.

I think it depends on what lines, weights, baits you plan to use. If you dropshot Texas style the MLXF may work better for you.

People will say the regular Avid will do just fine especially if you’re running braid to leader since the guides on the Avid X are literally so small. But with light line I dont think micro guides will be an issue.

I use the Avid X 7' MLF and love it. I do not have any of the other rods you mention, so I cant offer a comparison.

With st croix, I would stick to ML-F to ML-XF. Had an avid x and Mojo spinning rod, they are both nice, but the avid x is nicer if you can live with micro guides. I would say overall, the Mojo 6'10 ML-XF is a solid choice. The avid x being a bit more higher end.

Thank you to everyone for the responses. I ended up ordering the 6'6" Avid X MLF.

Great choice! I think you will love it.

I find the Avid X spinning rods to have too short of a handle/grip. They always feel tip heavy to me with my reels on them.
