i know someone who is selling a 1989 astroglass for 2,000 dollars. i think it would be a good starter boat for me. it has a 120 hp motor. is that a good deal and what should i look for when i go check it out? he said everything works but i dont know a lot about them .

Very, very carefully check the transom on that boat.  It's probably rotten.  As is the floor and stringer system.

where should i look ? im not familiar with the different parts. is a astroglass the same as an astro? i cant find any pics of one.

I have a 1989 Astro. At that time they were made by Brunswick Marine as were ProCrafts. The two boats were identical except for the decals. The 120 HP motor surprises me a bit since so far as I knew the were standard with a Merc 150 XR4. My boat has a big Atro decal on both sides and the manufacurers plate says Brunswick Marine.

If this is the same boat and in good shape you should love it. It is not fast with the 150 so don't expect to win any races with a 120. Top end on mine with 1 person and a half load of fuel was 63mph (radar gun) but fill it with tackle and two guys and the mid 50's is tops. The boat gives a very dry ride and handles rough water.

Great storage and a wide front deck.

My boat has been garaged except for a one or two week fishing trip so rot has not been a problem. The boat was outfitted with a Motorguide TM and an in-dash flasher. If you could post a picture I could tell you if it was the same model.

Astroglass became Astro when the Brunswick (Mercury folks) bought them out. They were bought from Maidencraft who also made Procraft. Brunswick dropped the glass part off the name and eventually the whole brand.

Look for soft spots in the floor, motor mounting bolts sunk into the transom, rust eminating from the motor bolts, get up on the cavitation plate of the motor and bounce it real good, you should see no flex in the transom.  The Astroglass/Procrafts of that era and earlier were pretty bad for bad transoms and stringer systems.  

Last year I bought my first boat it is a 83 Astroglass with a 115 Mercury for $1000 bucks, except for a little soft spot in the middle of the floor I've had no problems with it(knock on wood). Now don't get me wrong she's not the queen of the ball no more but she's floats and gets me to the bass and thats all I wanted.

i got the boat. it is in great shape except the motor has no spark so i got it in the shop to get repaired. hopefuly it will be ready for my first tourny.

Congrats on the purchase.  Can you post some pics of you new boat?  I have an '88 Astroglass 195V combo with a 115 Rude on it.  I am still replacing the stringers and floor.  Just worked on it for the first time since mid summer.   Hope to have it done in a week or two.

Ok, here are a few pics of mine.  I bought it last year, April 2007.  I took it as it is in this picture on a fishing trip that week.

We found out the floor was toast while it rained for 3 days straight and softened the wood under the floor.   I felt it wasn't safe to use as was so I did this to it...

And it looked like this for almost 9 months while life was lived and repairs were made....

I learned just how much fiberglass work is in a bass boat compared to my old tri-hull boat .    This is me with 2 of my helpers replacing the stringers and sub floor.

Then all the sanding and scuffing for more coats of glass. ....

and what the floor looked like after 2 coats of glass..  ( it got 2 more coats)....

 

It's a ton of work, labor intense, at least 15 gallons of resin, who knows how much matting and cloth,  and I'll never do it again. :-*

and I just realized I don't have any pics with it back in one piece , rub rail, 10" jack plate, engine, etc.      Sorry, kinda like reading a book ant the last 3 pages are missing.    I'll try to take some pics and update you.

I just bought an astroglass 1987 178v with a 150 evinrude nice boat solid transom solid floor etc.  their is three plugs on the back of this boat 1 is for the main drain I am not sure what the other two are for the fella I bought it from was not a fisherman he was a joy rider and sealed them off with silicone so they would not leak  what are they for this is my first fishing boat other than a canoe   can any body help.
