Question concerning side imaging

Featured Replies

A friend of mine has one of the hummingbird side imaging mounted on his bow with the trolling motor.

we havent been able to see anything that even remotely looks like the pics in the ads, no matter what structure we go over top of.

He had a fellow tell him to mount it on the console because they read better at 3-4 mph.

Just wondering if there is any truth to that?

I know a few of you guys have them and would like to hear some advice on using it and little quirks you may have found.

Thanks.

everyone ive talked to says that mounting the transducer on the TM doesnt affect how the unit works. mine is mounted with the transuder at the back and the speeds so far havent affected how the unit works.

I just got to use mine for the first time on Tuesday. Since then I've probably used it for maybe 12hrs total out of the 36 I spent on the boat. Also, speed actually does seem to affect it. It really seems to do quite well between 3-6mph.

Also, check how far you are using it to search. The shorter the distance you are "looking" the more detail you see.

See if either of those help.

They do work better at 3-4 mph.  But they will work on the TM.  The trick is to make slow turn with the TM.  If you whip it around fast it will take several second for the picture to clear up.  One other thing is READ THE BOOK.

I wouldn't think that it would work at all...It should just all be a blur. Think about it. If you turn the trolling motor, then your constantly turning the transducer (which is scanning out to the left and the right of the transducer). If the transducer is spinning clockwise and counterclockwise then how in the heck could it scan out to the side? You would be scaning the side, the front, the back, the side, etc.... Try this...try going in a straight line forward for about 100 ft WITHOUT TURNING and then come back and tell us what it shows.

p.s. Its sonar, not a video camera...It needs forward motion to work properly.
