Picking the right trout rod

Featured Replies

I’m looking to buy a good trout rod for the money. I was thinking of buying either the st. Croix trout rod or the okuma sst rod. Is there any other good rods for trout? And I don’t want to pay over 150. Any ideas will help

Loomis has trout rods. I fish with a St. Croix Trout Series Rod. I like it. But note if you have not touched one, the action is probably faster than what you are use to.

How big are the trout you are fishing for?

What kind of waters are you fishing?

For example: my trout around here are fairly small, as are most of my rivers and creeks.

I use 6' ultralight rods because my fish are tiny and creeks are very narrow with overhanging trees.

The trout I fish for are not big. They are usually 12in at most. Have you used loonies before?

Thats about the same size as most of my trout.

I just use three Daiwa presso rods with daiwa 750 size reels.

6' ultralight. 4#test for spinners.

6' ultralight. 4#test for small jerkbaits.

6'6" ultralight 6#test for powerbait.

I dont use expensive tackle for river/creek fishing because they usually get pretty abused- dunked, sit on sand and rocks, powerbait crud.

I would hate to scratch up an expensive combo.

I have caught lots of trout on an Ugly Stik rod and they cost well under $100.

not enough info.

what kinda of fishing are you doing?  i backpack for native trout.  i am now rocking a 3-piece Okuma SST UL, simply because i can store it in a tube and hook it to my backpack.

I am mainly going to be fishing ponds and small streams. I would like for it to be a two piece so I can break it down and put it in a tube. I wanted to buy the okuma sst UL 5 and half foot rod but it’s sold out everywhere. I can’t afford a really expensive rod.

I've never used this vendor, but it's in stock.

I fish 1/8 to 1/4 oz spinners in streams on a 5' UL St. Croix Premier. Mostly browns 8-14". If I start hunting for bigger fish 15"-20" I'll try a Light action or use my 7' ML/F on bigger streams where I've got the room to work.

The JDM market has super options for 2 piece trout rods.

Phenixs mirage, and elixir are no slouches either

The Okuma SST's are nice for the money.

I use an 8' SST Kokanee Light action casting rod as a BFS casting rod for crappie jigs and ultralight bass lure presentations

Similar here, I backpack with a 4'10" Major Craft Troutino/Revo ALC-BF7, fits well in a 30" fly rod tube and into a water bottle holder in my pack.

Check out AliExpress and look for the Tsurinoya Dragon.  I have one of them in 5' and it's one of my favorite trout rods.  My friend has a St Croix Trout in the same length, sold by St Croix as a fast action rod and it feels more like a moderate action by comparison.  Having said that, the action of the St Croix is preferable if you're swinging spoons and spinners, and the faster action rods are best if you're throwing small minnow baits and jigs.  I paid ~$50 shipped for my Dragon a few months back, received it within 2 weeks.

which Tsurinoya Dragon do you have? there's quite a few to choose from....
