First Foot Controlled Motor

Featured Replies

Hey guys I am about to purchase my first foot controlled trolling motor.  I want to know were I get the best buy for my buck.  Minn kota has a 2 year warrenty and I seen Cabelas has a refurbished model of the edge 40 for about $60 less.  I don't think I want to mess around with anything like that though.  I am looking at a Edge 40 but I wanted to ask around first.  What about motor guide?

IMO, all the new motorguides are inferior to the older models. I went through two in two weeks before i decided to switch to MinnKota! I got the 55lb Edge for my 16ft fiberglass boat. BassPro has a 65lb 24V Edge on sale for like $429.00!  :D

Hey dude were ya been?  Did you get my PM?  We need to go out soon.  That motor does look cheaper but it depends on shipping.  Is that the motor you have? What do you think.

It may be wiser to go with a 55 b. thrust. The more thrust you have , the better.

I thought about that as well.  Rite now I have a 36lb motor and does well.  Plus it's cheaper and will save battery power.  Thanx though

Hey guys after researching some more at walmart I found a Motorguide for $229.00  It has a 2 year warrenty also.  But it does not have the composite shaft or foot petal.  Is this important?  How much stronger is it?

It really depends on what size boat you are putting it on. You guys are saying 55lb without even knowing what size the boat is. I put a 40lb on my 16ft boat and I would say it is sufficient. When there are 25 mph winds I need to go to speed 5 and then it is way to fast (big jump from 4 to 5 only complaint). I like the motor very much. Also walmart shipping is $8.00 I believe. You can also do site to store, but that takes a lot of time. Give me a call today we can talk a little about the TM. I just went through this buying process a little while ago.

Buy a Minn Kota you will not be sorry. Also, saw in one of the BPS ads a foot controlled BPS branded trolling motor but it had the composite shaft and MK style foot control. I couldn't find it on the website but if you have a BPS close by you may want to take a look. It was a really good price too. I believe a 55lb for less than $300, but I could be wrong.

It is a matter of personal preference.  IMO both MK and MG produce quality products.  But for me, Motor Guide is the only option.  I detest the Minn Kota foot control with a passion.

You don't save battery power by using a smaller motor. You will use more if you have to put a 40# motor on 100% then you would with a 55 on 75%.

ok guys thanx.  Well I have a really light boat.  Its a 12' row boat. So I am certain that the 40lb will be good enough.  I do like my Minn Kota I have now as well.

I wouldn't go any higher then a 40. The other thing is with a foot controlled trolling motor is that you need space in your boat for the foot control to be placed. I use a 40 for my 16 ft boat and I love it.

Thanks Robby I am sure it will fit.  Its a small boat and a little tight but it will work.  I have plans to make more room after this next year.  Here is a link of my rig The Godson

Sharkbite,

Smaller thrust motors don't use less power. You might run the bigger thrust motor at a lower setting but the power used is the same. Reference one of your posts, how does a foot controlled motor not have a foot pedal?

What do yuo mean that the motor dosent have a petal?

Muiddy, my first TM had a foot controlled power with a manual steer. I wanted Sharkbite to be sure he was talking what he wanted. TM's cost too much to make a mistake.

I am very sorry and I was out of line I PM'd you an apology I misread who it was from

I looked at your boat pics. If you haven't added a deck to that boat you really should consider getting a hand controlled tm for the back of that boat. A foot pedal in the front of that deep v boat would be a royal pain in the @$$. If you haven't already bought one, take your boat down to the lake along with a couple bricks and try putting your right foot on the bricks and your left in the bottom of the boat. Then imagine how it would feel after a few hours. Please don't take offense but I really think you should reconsider.

We do it all the time up here. Just a small peice of ply wood on the floor, without ecking out the whole boat, works like a charm! 8-)

hey guys I received the motor today.  Like Muddy said by next year I will have a floor in my rig.  But for now I must rig it to work.

Thanx for the input John
