I am wondering the best way to measure for a new trolling motorshaft length for a bow mount. I think you should measure bow to water line and add 22". I have the thrust figured. Any ideas on charts for best fit shaft lengths? o the boat i am looking to fit is a 1990 289 stratos f/s. 45"or 50"

You've pretty much got it right. Measure from the mounting platform to the waterline and add 2 feet. If it falls between two sizes I would go with the longer one, I figure its easier to shorten the shaft by raising the motor then it is to make one longer.

Not so sure you want to buy the longest shaft you can afford, if you fish anywhere thats actually shallow and you have to shorten it it will make it stick up real high, even enough it can get in the way of casting.  They make some that are ridiculously long for big deep V's.  Get the best approximated length you need, but like bigbassguy said, if your inbetween go to the bigger.  I do agree with Catt though on power.  You will never regret going the largest you can afford.  

MinnKota maximum shaft length is 62

MotorGuide maximum shaft length is 60

Neither one will be to long even when put on a Stratos 289 Fish & Ski; you never buy based on shallowest water but rather on deep rough water where your will need as much shaft underwater as possible.
