it should be fine, just be careful if it starts to get windy.....

I used a MinnKota 65 (28 lb thrust) for years on a 14' jon in small lakes.  The only time I ever had any problems was when the occasional  afternoon thunderstorm would create wind gust over 30 mph.

I got a 50# Minn Kota on my 1446, I used to have a 12# (it was free). the 12# would work alright if there was no wind and I was not in a hurry to get anywhere.

The 50# will break even heading into Winds of 65 MPH, on a normal day though it rocks.

I would expect 27# (especially for the right price) would work on most situations. High winds would be the exception.

I agree, it will work for what you need it for 95% of the time unless you fish in a wind tunnel.  Just know your limits and take a paddle : )

Not enough in my book of experience.

You can never have "too much" thrust.

27 lns will get you somewhere as long as the conditions are fine, add a little wind and pretty soon you find out you need more power. Also, the smaller the TM the faster it will drain your battery dry, a bigger TM has to work less and your battery lasts longer.

I agree, save up a little more cash if you can and get bigger. I have a 55lb on my 10ftr and wish it was more sometimes.

I started this year with a 12' jon and a 17lbs thrust TM and on a calm day I couldn't complain...it was just great to be fishing again.  Then after only being out a couple times we had a little wind kick up one day and naturally, it was a head wind.  I swear the boat was just barely moving all the way back across the lake.

A few days later I picked up a 10' jon for $50 and after a couple packs of JB Weld and two cans of moss green spray paint I put it on Craigslist...with that 17lbs thrust attached and tossed in the used battery.  I had $240 in my pocket a couple hours later.

I took that and bought the VariMax 40lbs thrust, added another $50 out of pocket and bought the best battery I could.

All I can say is I have absolutely no regrets at all.  Not only can I fish all day and still have tons of battery life, but according to the GPS I can go across the water at 3.5 mph.  Not exactly picking bugs outta your teeth fast but hey, I actually leave a little wake now.   :)

So in short (too late now eh?), you'll be fine but you will eventually want to get something more powerful.

YES, the 27 should work.  I now have a bigger boat but once had a 14' with a 20 horse Merc.  I used a 32 Lb hand control MinnKota and really liked it.  That boat on a full battery charge would plane off!  I also had 3/4" plywood decking down and a make shift live well.  It was really heavy.  I know if 32 Lb worked for me then you would be fine with around 30 Lb.  I'd get at least a 32 Lb though for the windy days and as mentioned above get a good battery.  I've heardy Interstate and Optima are the best batteries.  Good luck.  I now run a 67 Lb Motorguide on a 18.5 bass boat.... a lil small though, wish I had an 80 Lb for the wind.
