Line Choice for Smaller Swimbaits

Featured Replies

I've been collecting swimbaits in the 3/4 to 1.5 oz range: Bucca Baby Gill, Gantarel Jr, and S-waver 168.

Now I need to start throwing them!

I dug through older threads on this topic:

Saw a lot of recommendations for Big Game and P-line CXX.  I would say 20 lb was the sweet spot.

Given that posts in the mid-2010's showed a lot of preference for YZH, it was notable to me to see such strong preference for CXX.

Most of the posts I saw were a few years old.

I'm at the point now where I don't mind paying a bit more for a line, especially with $15-35 baits on the line.  But a good value is also appreciated.

What are you all throwing your swimbaits on, in the range mentioned?

Big Game has long been my favorite line for many applications however, depending on the rod your using and how far your casting, BG probably has too much stretch.  When I first used a swimbait, I didn’t have the proper rod with me and was making long casts with a 6 1/2 MH rod.  It just didn’t have the muscle to hook the fish.  The next time I brought my jig rod which I still had BG at that time and I did much better but still lost some fish.  I then changed line to FC and didn’t lose any fish.  This was using the bigger swimbaits in the 5-6 inch range.  This is what I’ve done since and had good results.  I don’t know what the experts say but that’s what worked for me.

For smaller SB, I am using my spinning gear with a 6’ rod and I use braid w FC leader.  Mostly because I always have braid on my spinning gear.

Interesting thanks. I will be fishing with  Dobyns Fury and Champ XP 795 rods and revo beast x reel.

20 lb Big game would be fine with those baits.  I would stick with a mono line.  Floro sinks a little more.    The gantrel and s-wave are glide baits that fishes more on top water column.

Whatever you decide to spool up you shouldn’t have any issues throwing the on your rod and reel

20 is to heavy I throw those exact baits on 15lb big game. I use 20 for baits that are 3.5 oz.

Like was said above - 20 lb is heavy for those. I would, and do, use 12 and 15 lb CXX for that size, mostly 12.

Yeah, if your fishing mainly open water, you could easily get by with a good 15 lb line. I use 17 for grass, and semi heavy cover, for open water I'll switch to 15, even in clear water.

More important is the rod imho.. A rod rated for 1 to 4 oz would work really well.

Thanks, the two swimbait rods I have are Dobyns 795's rated 1-5 oz.

Based on the responses will probably go with 17 lb line equivalent.
