2tall79 Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 Anybody have a source for ammo, brass, projectiles, and dies? Looking to buy a Sig here locally, but I need to know I'll be able to shoot it first. Thanks Quote
BayouSlide Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 I have a nice collection of 10mm pistols. Starline brass is the best, IMO. Google and buy direct from the company. Hard to go wrong with .40 Hornady XTP 180 gr projectiles. When available I use Zero .40 180 gr JHP available direct from Roze Distribution, Zero's direct sales website. I load 10mm on a Dillon 550B with a dedicated Dillon shell head and a Redding competition seating and a Lee factory crimp die, in addition to the Dillon sizing and seating dies. Highly recommended if you have a Dillon reloader. The 10mm is a reloading caliber...versatility and economy make it so. 1 Quote
2tall79 Posted February 13, 2021 Author Posted February 13, 2021 Yeah, I know all that. But there is a shortage on and just try to find any of that. Hence my query. Thanks Quote
BayouSlide Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 Sorry I misread your inquiry. You're correct in that finding components is hit and miss these days. I shot competitively for many years so I'm used to keeping many years worth of everything on hand to avoid dry spells like the current circumstances. Good luck. 1 Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted February 14, 2021 Super User Posted February 14, 2021 Good luck on that one. It's probably going to be a while before any of that stuff shows back up on the shelves. I think most reloaders are scared of what the future looks like and scrambling to buy what they can, while they can. I too shoot a 10mm and am lucky enough I reload and have a reasonable supply, not enough to do the practice shooting I used to do but enough to last a while. 1 Quote

I've lost count of all the cyclical ammo/reloading shortages caused by one thing or another that I've weathered. Eventually you understand the best approach is "Buy when cheap and stack 'em deep." 1 Quote
2tall79 Posted February 15, 2021 Author Posted February 15, 2021 I stocked up on everything I shoot after the last shortage. I guess buying into a new caliber is a bad idea right now. Quote
2tall79 Posted February 16, 2021 Author Posted February 16, 2021 Well I found a die set on Ebay that I spent an obscene amount of money for. And I made a trade with a guy and picked up 300 1x cases and 100 XTPs. I've got plenty of powder and primers so if that Sig is still available I'm good to go. For a while anyway. Quote
Randy Price Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 Back when I had my Glock 22 & 23 one good thing about the .40 S&W is that I could always find ammo for them. 1 Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted February 19, 2021 Super User Posted February 19, 2021 Yea, you can find a few 40S&W bullets here and there, if you are willing to pay the stupid prices some of them want, which with the 10mm, I'm not sure there is much of anything specific to it. Now, Starline has their 10mm Mag brass in stock but no 10mm Auto. If you want to spend the time and effort to trim down the Mag brass to Auto length, you should be able to get all you want. If you like doing hot loads, like my 180gr @1,350FPS, the mag brass might suit you better. You can find a few sources for plated bullets but not of that does you any good if you don't have plenty of powder and primers because I don't thing you will find either of those. Especially with the threat of making powder a controlled substances. I have four pounds of Blue Dot and have been trying to order another four ponds for seven months. 1 Quote
2tall79 Posted February 19, 2021 Author Posted February 19, 2021 I've got mucho powder and primers. Xtreme has .40 180 gr RNFP in stock and I ordered 1K of them. I scored 500 cases 1x Winchester brass so I should be good. I bought the Sig yesterday. Just have to wait for background check to clear. Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted February 19, 2021 Super User Posted February 19, 2021 Here, if you have a carry permit, they don't have to do a background check, and we don't have one of those stupid cooling off laws where you have to wait a certain time before you can take possession of a gun. Here, you fill out the two page form, give em the money and go out the door with it. Some places have it where you have to wait as much as a week after doing the paper work before you can take possession. 1 Quote
2tall79 Posted February 20, 2021 Author Posted February 20, 2021 With a CPL we use to be able to that too. However, they changed the laws "for our safety" a couple of years ago so now we have to fill out paperwork, pay an FFl $20 to $40, and wait for background check from our city or county of residence. Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted February 20, 2021 Super User Posted February 20, 2021 Wow, I pay $30 for a carry permit that's good for five years. All I pay when I buy a gun is the price of the gun and state sales tax. Now, if you buy one that has to be shipped, you have to pay what ever the FFL holder wants to rip you off for. Which I'm lucky with that. There is a guy near me that does them just to p**s others off for $5. Most want $35 or more but some will do it for military ID for just $20, how nice of them. 1 Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted February 21, 2021 Super User Posted February 21, 2021 I’ve been tossing the idea of getting a 10mm 1911 found a few on gun broker with buy it now option not outrageous priced. the ammo is the only thing holding me back at this point. I’ve got plenty of ammo to stick with 9 or 45 but I want a 10 now. on the subject of acquiring hand guns in in the great state of NY. Permits are issued by county some better than others on getting it. Luckily I’m in a very pro 2A county I applied for my permit during this pandemic and it took 2months 2 days to get it. We have to get a “coupon” to pick up the pistols and have it added to our permits. My county gives them to us blank and we have 10 days to mail in the amendment with $5 to get it added to our permit. Other counties gotta mail in a receipt that you bought the gun with all the info on it and wait for a coupon to go pick it up. There’s only one other county that does the blank coupons besides mine that I know of the rest are all by mail or appointment only. we still have to do a 4473(background check) with every gun we buy it doesn’t matter if it’s even the same day. Buy one in the morning and go back 10 minutes later and buy another you gotta do another check. Some times there instant other times it’s days. I work in a gun shop doing the gun sales and checks all day when we get our gun shipments in. 1 Quote

I have shot a few 10mm 1911's . a Rock Island, a colt delta elite, and a sig. all decent guns. the delta elite is probably my favorite of the 3. I have also fired a glock 20. it wasn't bad but too big for me to hold comfortably. My current 10mm is a springfield xdm 5.5 . It is hands down my favorite 10mm. It fits my hand. Holds 15 rounds. very mild recoil, even with the heaviest 10mm rounds. It has one of the best triggers I have ever used on a striker fired gun. Even with the 5.5 barrel it is fairly light in a holster. It is my carry sidearm in the woods. All of this from a guy who generally does not like plastic guns. 1 Quote
2tall79 Posted February 21, 2021 Author Posted February 21, 2021 Surprise, surprise, surprise! (Jim Nabors reference here). I got the call yesterday that they released my gun and I just made it to the LGS before they closed. What a beautiful piece. Mfg in 2015 and literally has had 40 rds through it and it shows. I'll get a pic up today if I can figure out how. BTW, Clayton, unless you handload, you might reconsider jumping on the 10mm bandwagon for a while. IF you can find them, factory ammo is insanely priced. Even reloading components are hard to come by and quite pricey. I never thought I would see the day where primers are used as currency, but that's where we're at.......around here anyway. Quote
2tall79 Posted February 21, 2021 Author Posted February 21, 2021 OK, here ya go. Ain't she a beaut? 1 Quote

Super User Way2slow Posted February 22, 2021 Super User Posted February 22, 2021 I would luv to have the Colt Delta Elite but there were none available when I bought mine. Because of a special deal going for military at the time and getting it through the BX, I was able to get my Glock 20 (I have rather large hands) for $405 out the door (a few year ago) so that helped seal the deal on my getting the Glock. I luv the 1911 based guns, best looking handgun made, but don't own one. I'm not much of a pistol shooter and only have a couple. Several years ago, my wife decided we needed handguns (shocked me) so I bought my 10mm and her a baby Glock in 40S&W I bought a 40S&W barrel for mine for practice. The 10mm gave the arthritis in my hand a fit. With lighter 13# spring and light 130gr 40S&W loads, it didn't bother my hand and I didn't have to look for brass, it just pilled them up at my feet. Since I had never done much pistol shooting, it took at least 2,000 - 3,000 rounds for me to get competent with it. However now, you don't want me shooting at you with a rifle, at any range, you will end up in a place you probably don't want to be. Clayton86, I think you are going to find powder and primers next to impossible to get. While I'm in pretty good shape for most anything that could come along, I have quite a major amount of my just shooting for fun. I used to shoot several thousand rounds are year between pistol and rifle, I've only shot about 500 rounds in the past six months, and most of that was just working up loads for a 6.5 Creedmoor I built. I have been on couple suppliers notify list for several different primers and powders for over seven months and I have only be notified once on Mag Rifle Primes and then they limited to 1,000. I don't own or shoot neither of yours but they are the two most popular, so I have serious doubts about anything being available for them. And don't plan on things getting any better for quite a while. 1 Quote
