New tool, Pointer 65DD

A couple new tools delivered to me today, one was a Pointer 65DD.  Wow is that guy little!  Slightly more than 1/16 oz.  Guess I'll be throwing it with my hair jig spinning rod, even then I'm not sure I'll get the casting distance I'm normally comfortable with.  I wanted to see one, now I have... comment on your experience with this little bait if you want.  It's really cold outside and I'm bored...

Had a couple... didn't really use them much not really into jerkbaits.  Had no problem throwing them on a 6'6" M spinning rod though

I throw my 78s and larger with 6'10" Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth casting rod and Pixy 68L.  I think 3/16oz may be trying to push that envelope a little.

All of the other Pointer DDs I've fished have been much less "lively" than their shallower brethren.

In the spring, for pre-spawn smallmouth, the Pointer 65 is my go-to bait. I’ve caught more smallmouth on that lure than ALL my other baits combined. Some years it’s almost the only thing I use. Some years they aren’t as picky, but it always catches. Not only smallies, but largemouth, rock bass, perch, walleye,

Haven't used the DD but the standard 65 cast with no issues on 8lb mono and a 6' 8" M/MF spinning rod.

How far are you guys getting on the cast?  I'll most likely throw it with a 7' ML spinning... a rod that usually has a 3/16 oz hair jig attached to it.

As mentioned above, I'm not expecting as pronounced side-to-side movement as larger Pointers...

Maybe 50-60 feet if I'm really trying to get it out there? I'm not usually trying to get the longest cast possible but it cast pretty well for a small bait.

My waters are crystal clear... I like being able to put a bait 90' away.  I'm sure I'll still be able to catch bass with it.

With a 6'8" medium power spinning rod and 6lb flouro I can cast it what I'd consider pretty normal distances unless there's a decent breeze.  If you really want to maximize distance you'll want to drop to a ML or L spinning rod and go to 4 or 5lb flouro (or mono if you prefer).  Braid kills casting distance for these lighter baits so I'd stick with flouro or mono, as light as you feel comfortable with.

Duo makes a 63-size jerkbait with a weight transfer system (Rozante63sp I think?) which casts better but doesn't suspend as well as the LC.  The ultimate tiny jerkbait for casting distance is the Megabass X-80Jr (65mm), also with a weight transfer system...but these are hard to get a hold of now.  The LC 65 is still the primary one I use though.

I think differently concerning 8lb and 10lb braid on spinning gear.

I bought the deep diving version believing smallies holding 8' deep along the weed edges will be less skittish than smallies holding 5' deep.  I'll find out once I can no longer walk on my water.

I did too for a while...But eventually realized that light FC (or mono) was better for longer casts, at least for how I fish.  Everyone's different, but you might consider trying it if you are concerned about max distance...If for no other reason than to confirm your setup is optimized for the bait.

I think as long as you can get relatively normal distances you'll be fine...Smallies love that bait.
