I’m looking for a rod that would fill the niche above an older GLoomis MBR 784C that I own. It would be used for pitching into medium to heavy cover as well as jigs/worms in the foothill lakes here in CA.
Both of these rods have comparable lure and line weight ratings, the BPS being XF tip and the Dobyns a Fast. Neither are available in shops around here to actually check out in person. Which one would be the best choice for horsing bass out of cover and still be serviceable in lakes that are more rocky with less vegetation? I’m not looking for a pool cue.

I do not have those specific models, but I do own a 6'9" MH-XF carbonlite 2.0 and a Dobyns Fury 703c casting rods. 

 

My favorite is the carbonlite rods. Solid, light, best grip for me, action is crisp and more of a stout fast action. Primarily 3/16oz texas rigged soft plastics and heavier spinnerbaits and chatterbaits, jigs, etc. 

 

The dobyns is a Medium-Heavy, but kind of a stout medium power. Action is nice, kind of a moderate fast taper. I have only played with it, no fish yet, but thinking of getting a medium powered carbonlite to replace it with. I just prefer the feel of the carbonlite rods. My purpose for this rod is lighter spinnerbaits, texas rigs, squarebills, weightless plastics. 

 

I would assume the attributes of each rod would carry forward on the heavier models.

I have used my carbonlite 2.0 7’-0” med power-fast action combo for everything you just described for the past 2 years and it is everything you’re thinking it’s going to be?? I also used mine for lipless rattlebaits between 3/8 -5/8 and I really enjoy it for that.

Thanks, now if I can just find one in stock or even used at this point

Have a few Carbon lights and love em. Really light and strong. Got a few years on em and no complaints.

Dobyns 705c is definitely not a pool cue. They have quite a bit of flex. I have an older IMX and GLX 844c and a Champion 705c. The 705 is not as stiff as either of the Loomis 844c rods. The 705 has a slower taper and is quite a nice rod, just different.
