Ponds are half frozen and thawing

Featured Replies

Both my ponds are half frozen. Water is open by the fountains and none of the shallower banks have opened up yet except the part near the fountains but 65% of the bank is still pretty much covered with thin ice. Water temps are 41 degrees on the dot and water is still at its usual 1ft of visibility. It's slowly gonna rise and eventually be open all around but for now the shallower parts are still frozen.

What should I throw in the meantime? Bottom is mud rocks and some dead leafs. Rattletraps maybe?

Ice just came off here yesterday. Caught them on small blade baits today, but Ned is always my most consistent cold water producer.

How do you retrieve the ned in such cold water? I'm guessing very long pauses?

Yes - move it a few inches, then let it sit. Sometimes they’ll surprise you though and hit a more aggressive retrieve, so check it out. Every lake/pond is different.

I drove by the hudson on my way home today and I saw the water flow for first time in 2 months! Maybe wednesday I will try and toss some out there and catch fish.
