Sub 4oz spinning rods

Featured Replies

What medium or heavier spinning rods are under 4oz in weight? I have a St Croix Bass X 7'1 M that is 3.6oz, and a Shakespeare Excursion 6' M with Winn grips from Wally World that is an incredible 3oz (and only $20). My 2-piece Fenwick Eagle 6'6 M is close at 4.1oz.

From searching the forums, it looks like the Duckett Triad, Okuma Helios, Cabela's Carbonite, and Quantum Smoke might be, but I've never seen weights on them.

I was looking at these after you posted, but I'm scared from a lot of reviews saying the tip will snap off. You've never had any issues?

Until this year where I'm changing a few things around, it was a my spinning-crankbait rig. This clip shows that it can handle a decent size pike - stupid toothy critter bit off the lure just before I netted it.

Wow! I'm sold. I just ordered one with a Scorecard coupon, less than $40 out the door. Thanks friend!

I've found to be more than adequate...it's not an Avid-X or Legend, but it's a decent rod in that price group.

Rest of the rig was also 'low cost' - Pflueger Trion-35, 12# Yo-Zuri Hybrid line.

Have you weighed these yourself? I find it hard to believe a 7’ sc2 with aluminum oxide guides came in under 4oz.

Yes, these are all weights I've taken with my digital scale (when I bring the scale to Cabela's and Dick's, they think I'm a weirdo). The St Croix Bass X I weighed agrees with the weight on their website (3.6oz). My scale is accurate to about 0.2oz (it's my wife's kitchen scale--please don't tell), and I even double checked it by using the scale in the produce department at Walmart (the looks I got were priceless)! For the Shakespeare Excursion 6' M spinning, both the Wally World scale and my digital scale produced and incredible 3oz. It's a graphite composite and stainless steel guides and inserts, but still for 20 bucks with Winn grips.

Here's one to ponder: I picked up the Okuma Status VI 7' MH yesterday, and it truly does weigh a hair under 4oz. However, the Okuma Stratus VI 6'6 M weighs about 4.1oz ?. How does a short rod at lower power weigh more than a longer rod of stronger power? Both are two piece.

I was looking at the St Croix Triumph 6'6 M 2-piece spinning (TRS66MF2), and their website says 4.3oz, but Dick's website says 3.6oz. I'm assuming the manufacturer is correct, but if anyone out there could confirm, that would be great.

Some people collect stamps--I tote my digital scale from store to store in an effort to find a new rod that weighs a fart less than my current rod.

I’m sorry, I’m at loss here. You weight a bunch of rods just to find a few under 4oz to catch bass. That is a lot of effort for such a low return.

There is that. Even with a rod that weighs 5.5oz, the rig itself with reel only comes in at 11.8. The rig with the only sub 4oz I own (The Stratus) still comes in at 14.36oz...low-end spinning reels weigh more than the low-end casters...always.

The total weight of all my rigs runs 10.78oz (1000size spinner on L/F rod) to 14.36oz (Trion-35/Stratus)...my BC rigs fall close to the middle of that range. A couple ounces either side of midpoint really isn't going to affect performance.

Yes.

Do you really want to know the depths of my illness?

EDIT: For context, I am a research scientist at an R1 university, and my research involves weighing hundreds of animals sourced from different populations, then running mixed-effects models to look for significant differences in weight (in some cases 0.001oz).

TL/DR: My job is analyzing weight related data and Ohio winters are long

Gah - reminds me of a project my Limnology class had back in '79. Weekly water samples taken from half-a-dozen different places on two lakes connected by a channel. We were tracking dissolved oxygen levels.

Far as the spreadsheet - I'm that 'anal', but it's more for my personal OCD than anything else.

Holy cow dude, don't EVER get into reloading ?

Cool stuff.  As I am getting older weight is much more important to me.

Wish there was a site or public spread sheet that had weights of all rods since most manufacturers don't list them.

I get it. I don’t go around with a scale in the store, but I will check the balance point on rods.  The rod can weigh 3.5oz but if it’s too tip heavy I’m putting it back.  I’m a fruitcake with this.  The Quantum Smokes are very light and their power ratings are understated.
