I find usually they prefer a chatterbait, swim jig or spinnerbait on a given day. I usually try all 3 unless they're hammering the first one I try. Usually I am a spinnerbait guy, but have had some good seasons with the swim jig especially pre spawn.

I tend to live or die by the chatterbait. I don't think I've caught more than three fish intentionally swimming a jig. However I intend to work on that this year....in fact, I found these in a TW box I just opened 

I turn to a swim jig when conditions are tough. A 1/4oz swim jig with a Zoom Swimmin' Super Fluke Jr is a killer on post cold front outings. I cut the skirt back to the hook bend and bite the 'head' of the plastic. It falls slow enough that it won't bury into the weeds and can be retrieved over the tops drawing the fish up. I've also slow rolled over over hard bottom for smallies.

Similar for me, 1/4 swim jig (white or bluegill) with a Rage Tail Menace Grub in matching color was my favorite.

Perfectly summed up. I have never got a bit in open water, but they’re the first lure I’ll tie on in this situation.
