jgordon
A buddy and I are planning a trip to somewhere in OK for a a few days. This will be around end of April we are thinking or mid April. We have heard good things about Arbuckles but thought would ask advice on any other lakes maybe might be worth checking out for Bass fishing and bwofishing at night. Any tips or thoughts appreciated. We are coming from Kansas and just wanted to try out new water.
Sprocket
Arbuckle has some big fish in it. I moved down here from Kansas about a year ago. I've found Arbuckle to be a very fickle lake. I've only fished it a few times and have had mixed results. Most not that great. That being said, the guys that know the lake catch some really nice fish and tournaments take a really big sack to win/place. So far, it fishes nothing like Kansas lakes. It's deep, clear and void of timber. There are places with grass and some of it is in 20' or more of water. Not sure what that polar week did to the grass. Will be there Monday and or Tuesday. Super User jbsoonerfan Posted March 26, 2021 Super User Share Posted March 26, 2021 It is a tough lake to figure out. I am a shallow water, find cover kind of fisherman and that lake does NOT suit my style at all. As mentioned, it is deep and clear and if you are an off shore fisherman, you should be able to find some fish. There just aren't enough "targets" for me to do well. I can catch a few each time, but it just doesn't produce for me like it does some other guys.
Global Moderator Mike L Posted March 26, 2021 Global Moderator Share Posted March 26, 2021 The spawn should be winding down from now until May. If you struggle there’s a small creek that connects to Reedy Lake to the south which usually has a little clearer water this time of year but not by much. There are brush piles in both but you’ll need electronics to find them. Both can be tough but there are some hogs in that lake. If you’re so inclined and have the time, Lake Walk-In-Water, Placid and Grassy are a few others in that general area that can produce nice bags also. Good Luck. Super User Bankc Posted March 26, 2021 Super User Share Posted March 26, 2021 I don't think you're allowed to bowfish at night. I'm not sure if that's a state regulation or just a city one, but I know in my local lakes in OKC, you're not allowed to bowfish at night. So you might want to check up on that one. I haven't been to the Lake of the Arbuckles yet, so I can't help you there. As for other good lakes to hit up, it depends on how far you want to travel. Konawa is good, and wouldn't be too far out of your way. It's a powerplant lake, so it's usually pretty warm and has lots of vegetation. I'd definitely recommend this one. It's a real nice lake with no launch fees. Texoma would be just a bit further down I-35, though it's more known for stripers. And being a border lake, you'll probably need a Texas fishing license too. But it's huge and there aren't many places you can fish for stripped bass of this size inland. Bell Cow is nice, and it's about an hour and half north of Konawa, but not totally out of your way. It's basically an underwater cedar forest, so lots of cover, though it runs shallow in a lot of spots so it's hard to navigate if you don't take it slow and keep an eye on your depth. There's a creek channel on the west side that you'll want to stick to on that end of the lake. Get off that and you'll find yourself in a foot or two of water with stumps everywhere. On the east side it's a lot easier to navigate. Sooner lake in the northern portion of the state is supposed to be pretty good, and would be on your way. But I haven't fished that one yet either. Those would be my choices unless you wanted to get out further east into the state. There are a lot of great lakes out that way, especially as you near the Arkansas border. jgordon
Well thank you fellas yeah we aren't great at deep fishing haha and electronics hmm we might need to look at something else. Also bowfishing might just be a back up if the randomly saw something so thank you for that info.
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted March 26, 2021 Super User Share Posted March 26, 2021 If you aren't dead set on Arbuckle you could go to Okemah and Eufaula. You could stay in Henryetta and be close to both. I like both lakes. There are smallmouth in Eufaula and some really good crappie fishing if you want to try that. jgordon
Well we did lake Eucha and what a rough time on the water. We arent used to clear deeper lakes like that and then the weather was rough over the weekend. Slow slow fishing and dragging not my favorite style and realized I need more deeper water lures. The buddy I was with finally got skunk out of the boat for himself at hour 11 it was a rough trip. Did learn a few things so thats always a good thing.
