  2. Don't bother with Perry Lake for a while. Army Corps of Engineers listed it as being low due to water release. When we got there the parking lot for the ramp was nearly fully under water and obviously the ramp was closed. USGS showed it at 8 feet over full pool height of 891 above sea level. This morning showing 901 so it raised another 2 feet over night. I knew it had rained quite a bit in the water shed for the lake but was still surprised it was that high. Went and played with the dinks at Lone Star and got soaked. Y'all have a great Independence Day but it won't be at Perry!
  3. Wife has been bugging me about trying new lakes so thanks for the info on Mound City. We decided to try Perry this weekend. We have a small (15') pontoon boat with only a 10hp outboard so we have to pick our spots carefully. I'm looking at the Rock Creek area specifically the area where highway 237 crosses. There is a nice looking ramp nearby and it looks like a nice compact area with lots of features. What say y'all? Would I be better off looking elsewhere or am I on the right track? Thanks!
  4. I was very surprised by the size of the fish after what we saw last year. My wife didn’t believe me till I took her out on Monday. They bit everything I threw at them on Saturday. All the big ones bit a Shaky Head with a Z man TRD worm. The Smallie took a Ned.
  5. I had no idea there were Smallmouth in Shawnee Mission Park Lake. I caught this #3 on Saturday the 1st. We got worried about SMP last year when we didn’t catch many Elmos over #2 and most were less than a pound. Two trips over the weekend (Saturday and Monday) restored hope. The Smallie was my 2nd fish and I had 11 Largemouth over three. Broke off a dandy that looked to be in the 5 to 6 range (should have retied). Monday wasn’t quite as good for numbers but the size held up. Saturday was a zoo with so many rental kayaks and paddle boats. They didn’t bother the fishing though!
  6. I ran into a situation last week that I believe we have all been in before but I rather doubt was handled as poorly as I did. I was fishing down a bank early in the morning (first on this bank) and had gone about 150 yards. All of a sudden, a boat comes out of the creek that opened on the bank and proceeded to go around me by about 150 feet and nose into the bank and start fishing. In my thinking, that morning, what he decided was that he wasn’t going to fish behind me but rather I would be forced to fish behind him or give up the bank. Like I said I didn’t handle it very well and I’ll leave it at that. My question to all is, what would you do? Would you just continue to fish under your new circumstances? Would you simply leave and let them have the bank? Or would you confront him? Is there one right answer? I am old school and was taught years ago that there is certain respect among fishermen and that you should respect other’s space. I try to always ask how another wants me to go past them and usually it is a positive situation. This guy was about half my age and wanted nothing to do with the “respect” I mentioned. It was his bank now and I wasn’t going to persuade him any other way. I have seen this many times in the past few years and just wanted to hear y’alls opinion on the matter. Happy Fishing!
  7. My wife wrote this poem for me for Father’s day. There are several personal references about our loudmouth dog and some particular music we like and our life in general but the rest is pretty much spot on about fishing. Hope you folks enjoy. A Fishing We Go: To go a fishing, We be wishing. Watching the weather, To know whether. Counting the days, Till we fish play. With rods and reels, And labrador squeals. Over knots, hooks and baits Labors my sweet mate. Van Morrison theme song, Oh the water! Can't go wrong! Let's enjoy it while we can, A great line from Van! Our little fishing life, Just husband and wife. Over our little city lakes, Trusted trolling motor takes. Where cardinals serenade, Through woods and glade. Bullfrogs that go croaking, Turtle heads above water poking. And the sun's coming up just, With Pooh Winds blustering us. We trolling do ferry, Where pontoon will carry. Whir of a fishing reel, How will the bite feel? Skunks outta the boat, Leaders don't gloat! Temps could be hot, Water helps us alot! Let's find some shade, Or sun in a quiet glade. Sunscreen slather alot, Will the bugs bite me or not? First boat on the water, Dreams of a fish slaughter. Sunset of your dreams, Sunrise that glow-gleams! In a shady cove, With clear water below! Hooked on a rock, Now that's a shock! Stuck in a tree, Will I ever get free? Lost another jig, Sweating like a pig! In Lily pad land, Bass bites the plan! Back to the dock, Today not the fishing jock. Loading the boat, Weary home we tote. Trolling motor down, Sneak softly around. Trolling motor up Playtime for pup. Ride across the lake Leaving a big wake. Big fat freakin bass, Wide mouthed with sass. Crappie me some, Cuz eating is yum! Catfish is jumping, Hearts get a pumping. Jigs, crankbaits and lures, Sport fishing fun ensure. Much more than a sport, It's a lake life resort. With water reflections On many life lessons, We venture out a pair On the waters of "no cares"! 9. I had two really great days of fishing this past weekend. Friday my wife and I went out to Lenexa (1st time on the water there) and really got after them. I had 13 with 5 that would go 2 lbs. and the rest dinks. They all came on green pumpkin beavers. The best part of the day was teaching my wife to pitch. She really picked it up fast and I am so proud of her. The weed growth made it difficult for her to detect bites but she did manage to catch one at about a pound and a half. We spent about three hours there and just had the best time. Saturday I went out to Douglas for the first time. Again a great deal of weeds in the water and the bass were holding to almost any irregular feature on the edges. Caught 11 with the biggest being near 3 lbs. There were some super aggressive bites and again, all came on the green pumpkin beaver. This made my 6th trip on my little pontoon boat and I am having a blast with it. Heading to Leavenworth Lake Friday this week looking for a few Smallies. Y’all have a great week!
  10. Most of my bites, including the 4, were the softest little tap where you think, "did I just feel that?" or "that doesn't feel right". Just feels a little heavier than the bait. This was my first 4 pounder in over 12 years as I just started fishing again this year. So glad to get the feel of the soft bite back. So many fish are missed on soft bites. Also had to pull her out of a tree and my old method worked there too. So very glad to be back fishing.
  11. I decided to go ahead and check out Kill Creek this past Saturday and was not disappointed. I caught 10 LMs with the biggest being 4# (pictured). I had several 2s and the rest were various sized dinks. All came on Beavers using large and small, green pumpkin and California 420. Very pleasant day.
  12. Excellent post. Thank you!
  13. Arbuckle lake can be very difficult at times.
  14. To anyone that regularly fishes Kill Creek or Shawnee Mission have you ever been asked to show your Trout permit? I was going to take my new boat out to Kill Creek for its first trip when I read about the Boat permit and then the Trout permit. That adds up to an additional $50 to fish a Johnson county lake that has Trout stocking. I blew it off and went to Middle Creek and caught 8 or 10 Largemouth, several nice Crappie and a 3lb Walleye. Thank you
  15. 8# Caught at Mountain Lake, Oklahoma 5-16-2003. Bait was 5/16 brown Eakins jig. Left Oklahoma behind for Michigan in March of this year. Have caught many good fish this summer but doubt if I'll ever see one like this this far north.
  16. NBR, I am starting to see that you are right. The river thing sounds interesting though. Don't get me wrong, I do love to catch the big green girls but the few <3lb smallmouths that I have caught in Okla. have me wanting more. Bigger too! I think my biggest adjustment will be waiting till June to fish. I have already been out 3 times this year in Okla.
