Sandy River Reservoir trip

Featured Replies

Just got back from a weekend trip to this Farmville/Rice Va lake.

known for its lunkers which was our mission.

We did find some fish. Actually is was a great weekend.

53°-61° was the water temp.

61° was mid day on Monday 4/5.

Sunday was calm and I personally stuck two 4lbers and missed a few that could have been larger. My partner took a 4 and a 6.1.

Muddy water was the key. Jerk baits and jig n craw in blue/blk.

We saw a few beds but no one was home.

The fish were full of eggs but, clearly hadn't been on beds.

Plan on a mid to post Spawn trip in May.

Still looking for that PB (personal best)

Pictures would be nice but, they won't upload.

Only been to Sandy one time last fall. Very cold day and only caught one fish on a spinner bait. I too have heard of the plus size bass that place holds. When i'm feeling adventurous and have a bit of time to spare i'll give it a go again. Good luck to you in your May trip if you go. Posting pics is always a pain, but very worth it!

There are certainly 10-pounders in there.

I was fishing closer to Richmond on Monday and the mud was thick enough to limit visibility to 1'. And it took a chartreuse spinnerbait with a chartreuse/silver glitter grub on it to see down that far. The few fish we found were on the surface in what few pads that were up.

Haven’t fished there in a few years as I’ve focused on rivers closer to home but I do want to get back out there. I have had some good success there the few times I’ve been.
