Casting reel hard to turn when drag is off

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

I have a Shimano Core 100Mg7. When I turn the drag "off" the reel is difficult to turn (there is resistance) I have to tighten the drag in order to be able to turn it freely.

I read in another post that the same thing happened to someone's reel when the drag was tightened. Mine is the opposite issue.

All of the washers are on correctly as per the schematic.

Any ideas?

Thanks everyone!

Did you replace the drag washers?

Sometimes if you replace the drag washers the new ones are a little thicker and cause the drag stack to rub against the inside of the reel causing some resistance.

It seems to effect some reels while others are fine.

The same thing happened to me after I replaced the stock drag in several shimano Calcutta 50b's. Some were fine, others had resistance unless the drag star was turned almost all the way down. I had to remove several shims on the base of the drive shaft to get rid of the resistance.

Resistance how? As in the handle doesn't spin freely if you slap it? Or as in its actually difficult to reel?

If the first, it shouldn't spin as freely because when the drag is completely loose, what's happening is the keyed washer is sliding on the drag washer and not engaging the main gear which creates some resistance.

When the drag is increased, the keyed washer is not sliding, but engaging the main gear and spinning it and the pinion and worm gear along with it. The main gear has more mass than the keyed washer and less friction so if you slap the handle it turns easier and for longer.

I may have misunderstood your question though ...

I didnt replace them. It's a used reel I bought but the internals still look new.

I'm thinking maybe I must take the washers out, clean them and put a light coating of grease on them.

Thanks for the help!

Basically, unless the drag is about at least 40% of the way tightened, I can't "slap" the reel. The best way I can describe the resistance is it feels as if the spool tension has been turned tightened down really hard.

The weird thing is it only happens if the drag is on light. I've I tighten the drag I can "slap" the reel and it the spool/handle spin nicely.

Thanks for the help

It honestly sounds like a non-issue to me.

Does it turn freely as long as there is enough drag pressure to turn the spool?

It does. If the drag pressure is, say, at least 40% of max, you wouldn't even know there was an issue. Maybe 40% is inaccurate, lol. I set the drag light enough so that when I put my thumb on the spool and hold it down, I can still turn the handle freely. If I make the drag lighter than that, that's when the resistance starts.

Just very odd to me. I've never seen something like this before.
