Loosening drag after fishing

Featured Replies

For some reason I back the drag off on my baitcasters but not my spinning gear at the end of the day.  No idea why I’ve just subconsciously done it for a while

I always loosen my drag at the end of the year and between outings early in the year and late in the season when I don't get out regularly. Once I start fishing regularly, I will usually set it and leave it set for the season.

I also made it a habit to check drag before going out so I don't lose any fish when I forget to set it.

If you can do it, good, but if you forget I don’t think it is gonna hurt much especially when you fish often enough. I don’t normally loosen the drag unless I know I’m not gonna use the reels for months. On carbon drag I normally just fish as is but felt drag (spinning) I try to make a habit of resetting the drag every outing. Reset by loosen the drag and pull the line off a couple feet or until it feel smooth, then set the drag.

For the most part I keep my combos rigged in case I want to mess with them during my late night tackle fussing sessions.  I back the drags off so if something snags the line it will pull put and not risk snapping the tip.  I do the same when fishing on foot and have to move spots.
