Crawfishing VA

Featured Replies

New to Virginia, originally from Washington. Having a hard time finding rules and/or seasons for crawfishing out here. Everything i find in the regulations are so vague.  Washington has strict rules on traps and seasons. Any help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated kind of want to make sure I'm informed before I go out and get a fine or something. Thanks guys

  1. Fish bait: minnows and chubs (Cyprinidae), salamanders (less than 6 inches), crayfish, and hellgrammites—50 in aggregate (all species combined) unless said person has purchased fish bait and has a receipt speci- fying the number of individuals purchased by species. Note: Madtoms, crayfish, and salamanders cannot be bought or sold.

That's all I see.  If you have more questions,  I'd call DWR.  They're pretty good in my experience.

And the Virginia DG&WF does not want you to purchase live crawfish from other states like the Carolinas or Louisiana and release them into Virginia waters.

We do it for our crawfish boil which is allowed since we do not release any crawfish into the Historic James River.

As far as I know, the last crawfish farm in Virginia was on the other side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and they closed shop many years ago.

How about posting your location on your avatar so we can give you better input on your questions.

Thanks guys for your inputs. I'm out in Virginia beach i couldn't figure out how to update my location on the avatar.

I'm really just looking to catch some and do boils for my family. I think I'll give DG&FW a call and see if there are seasons or rules. If I find out anything specific from them I'll put it on here

Asian food stores that have live fish will usually get craws seasonally. Since they’re a good store they can get them imported from LA and the likes legally.

So update for you guys, I called a few agents and from what we could find there are no season restrictions or trap requirements as long as you don't havest them from places that are stocked with trout and you can only harvest 50 at a time.
