Dobyns Fury Spinning Rod 6'6" Med Lt

Featured Replies

Who has one and what are your thoughts? Pros and cons? Looking for a ned rig rod but also want to try some drop shot, wacky rigs, Neko, etc. Could this be used as an all around finesse rod? Or should I consider a medium rod with fast or moderate fast action? Thanks and have a good one!

I would think that the ML in the Fury line would be excellent for your intended uses. I don't own it, but I have the M spinning rod in the Fury lineup. It is my favorite spinning rod in my lineup, though it is probably a touch heavier than you would want for your uses. I absolutely love my M Fury as a shaky head, light T rig, and small jerkbait rod.

I prefer shorter spinning rods, I have the fury 661 and the 662. If you are looking to throw 1/16 or 1/32 neds I would go with the 661. I use the 662 for 4 inch wacky rigs senkos, 3/8oz in line spinners , fluke jrs and poppers and find it super comfortable,  lightweight and sensitive. Some guys complain that the handle is too short, but for my style of fishing, I find it just right. Hope this helps you in your decision process.

If you want an all-around finesse rod from Dobyns, the 2 power is what you want.  I agree with Spro that the 1 power is better for 1/16 and 1/32 but for wacky, DS, shakey head, and Neko, a 2 power is better.

I'll just say 'Ditto'

I use a 1-power rod for Neds

2-power for pretty much everything else finesse

use the 7' med heavy fury rod for that stuff

That's what I use for that.

661SF and 662SF is the exact model? I'm wondering if maybe the ned rig won't work that great since there really isn't any clear water. I'd love to have specific more specific rods for certain setups. I'm wondering how a medium power, extra fast action rod would work for either of these setups...

For 6'6", ya -those are the Fury models

I'm running a Fury 702SF for general finesse

Diawa Procyon 701LFS for Neds.

Ned works in stained water too...just saying.

I'm just between a rock and a hard place. I work weekends and my wife works during the week and the 1 year old keeps us both busy. The lake I live just a few blocks from isn't that great of a fishery. So when I do have time to fish, that's where I go. I'm not sure if I'm fishing the ned correctly or if it's the fishery. The lake also has a ton of weeds which I know isn't good for ned, I just want to catch a decent one on it. I would probably have better luck with a drop shot, wacky rig, or shakey head. Thanks for the input so far

Sounds like you would be better off with the 662 Fury or the 702.  Both MN Fisher and I like a 1 power for Ned rigs but many, many guys prefer a 2 power so you can definitely fish a Ned with the 662.  The 2 power is much more versatile than a 1 power.  On average, I'd say the 2 power covers 80% of a fella's bass fishing spinning needs with the 1 and 3 power each covering 10%.  I only use a 1 power for Ned rigs, very light swimbaits, and hair jigs.  I use a Ned rig a lot but the other two presentations I rarely use.  The 3 power I only use for cracking heavy tubes for smallmouth, stupid tubes, and skipping docks which is something I don't do much of anymore.  I'd rather use a light baitcaster than a 3 power spinning rod anyways.  The 2 power is perfect for all the other stuff I didn't mention.   So make it easy on yourself, get the 662, some 20 lb braid, and you'll be all set.  If you become a diehard Ned rig guy you can specialize with a 701 later on.

Great advice! I'm not sure I would even notice a difference between a 1 and 2 power rod. Just trying to make my fishing experiences more solid by having more specific gear for different techniques.

I would put a FC leader on that - which I do on my 702. If you're going 20# braid, then go with an 8# leader - I'd suggest InvizX as it's pretty tough and supple (for FC).

Have to see what I have. I did buy some 10# mono for backing and then 10# braid for the main line and some Seagur FC for leader material. I might have some 20# braid.

10# braid would work fine for finesse as well - that's what I have on my 702 - with 6# Seaguar InvizX for the leader and 6# Sufix Elite as backing.

I like to keep the backing and mainline close to the same diameter...

What is the reasoning behind trying to keep the diameter the same? I'm guessing castability and less chance of the knots hanging up in the reel or line guides

If you get down to the backing on a cast...time to remove the remaining mainline and re-spool new on. You should never get to the knot between backing and mainline on a cast.

It's just an OCD thing with me to keep the two near the same diameter - nothing more.

There's guys here who know WAY more than I do...stick around and you'll find them

Once it starts - Bass season is closed here for another 4-1/2 days (Opens at 12:01 am Saturday).

Hope to do better than I did last year - course I only got the canoe on the water 6 times all 2020.

Minnesota doesn't have CNR all year round?

Nope - Bass, walleye, northern and muskie close the last day of February. Muskie opens June 5 this year, the rest open May 15 - bass for C&R only until the 29th when you can finally keep them.

Use to be, bass didn't even open until the Saturday of Memorial weekend...few years ago they finally allowed C&R to open when walleye/northern opened.

This goes without saying for me.  I always use a 6-8 lb leader.  LOL- I am not one of these guys that say it doesn't matter if you use a leader.  I fish clear water and I know it makes a difference.  Sure, if you are fishing heavily stained to muddy water I can see how it doesn't matter but I am never fishing that color water.  Sorry if I caused any confusion.  20 lb braid + an 8 lb fluorocarbon leader

No confusion - and sounds like you got your rig ready to go...long as the lines are quality.
