GPS/Fishfinder questions

Featured Replies

I want to move my present depth finder to the bow and get a nice unit for the cockpit.

I having a big problem with manufactures marketing names for the products.

For instance, Lowrance has different map programs that do not carry good descriptions. I can look up a map list, but what is displayed for that particular lake?

What comes as included....they give me a model name, but whats in it?

I'm slowly adjusting to the big price tags, but don't what to buy more than I need.

How do you guys sort all the crap out?

Side imaging; what does it do for you?

I'm a bit frustrated.

To get started, go to the mfg website and download a manual for the unit you are interested in. Read all of it.

For Side Imaging, visit the link that Kenny418 posted on the Humminbird 917c thread and look at all the pictures.

Lowrance has a version of Side Imaging called Structure Scan which is a $600 add on to the HDS units.

If you really want to get a handle on this stuff, you will have to do some research and a lot of reading.  As stated the mfg websites are good starting places.

Another thing to do is once you pick a unit or two, download an emulator and get familiar with some of the key pad functions.  Then go to a good place where they are sold or to a winter boat show with electronics displayed and have a hands on demonstration by a qualified sales person.  But you will have to have some basic knowledge before this will mean much.

Thanks for the help guys. I looked at down loading an emulator. The list of programs must have been 20, or more, with labels that made no sense. I need to know more before going there.

I spoke with a very knowledgeable sales guy at BPS Harrisburg, Pa.    I need to see him again. Maybe I'll stop there when visiting the Pa Sportsman's Show next month.

I'll check out the sites recommended here to gain a little more smarts.

Thanks

A note about the Lowrance emulator: if you have Windows Vista, it won't work. You need an older version of Windows.

I'm zeroing in on the Humminbird 917c., with Hotmaps Prem.

It's not clear what all I need to be "operational", meaning added cost.

I think maybe a GPS antenna, transducer, cables(?), mounting bracket.

The next jump in technology (3D or SI) is too big a big jump in price for me.

What are your thoughts on this model and manufacture?

If you get the 917c Combo as shown on the Humminbird website, it comes with the GPS antenna, power cord, transducer, and mount. The Hotmaps Premium is $149 for the region you need.

If you get an older/cheaper version, you get the 16 channel GPS antenna. If you get the newer issue, you get a 50 channel GPS antenna.

You will not be disapointed with the 917. I have it on my bow and it is a great unit.
