Big swimbaits on spinning gear?

Featured Replies

So I have not really wanted to invest in a swimbait rod and reel combo because to be quite frank, I dont have the money. I do have a 4000 sized spinning reel on a rod rated for 1/2 oz to 3 oz, do you think this rod would work fine for smaller swimbaits? I feel like it should, It may not cast as far a baitcasting reel and I wont be able to control the loud splash as much but, Would it work? I also have some bigger conventional reels and conventional rods for light inshore fishing that are rated for the same specs, would these work?

Try it! The retrieve IPT is well over 36”, slow down the retrieve.

Yup, what Tom said. Even a 5.0:1 ratio spinning reel is probably at least as fast as a 8.1:1 ratio casting reel if not caster though, so get used to reeling slow.

A rod rated to 3oz should be fine.

The thing about spinning rods is that (for example) a MH isn't the same as a MH casting rod. It's noticably a lot weaker in my experience, with more of a parabolic bend. So just make sure you can set a swimbait hook. Also, retrieving a moving bait with a spinning reel feels like doodoo once you've done so with casting gear. If it feels fine to you and you can set the hook and it can truly handle the weight, no reason it can't work.

If that's all you have then for sure that will work. I throw some pretty big baits on heavy spinning gear but for baits heavier than 2 oz I use a bigger baitcaster and heavy rod made to throw swim baits. As long as your spinning rod isn't bent like a noodle just holding the bait you should be in the ball park. A  good MH spinning rod with braid and a mono leader will work up to about 1.5 oz  after that you need to go with a little more rod when you can afford it. Plenty of good used rods to be had... I bought a used $100.00 St. Croix spinning rod today for $40 bucks. Gave the rod and cork a good cleaning and it looks new!

River2Sea S Waver is about 1.5 oz and is one of the best gliders out there and you can throw it on a good MH spinning rod. You don't always need a 20 foot bass boat and a $400 bait caster to successfully catch  big fish.
