light hair jigs?

Featured Replies

Do light hair jigs work well for schooling shallow bass in gen clear water? I thought they may work well because they look fairly natural, like bass schooling on points and coves in that 10-15 foot zone with water vis around 15-22 feet?

I feel like hair jigs are made for clear water. But they also seem to excel in cold temps when fish are less active. I'm not saying they won't work but to me there are far more efficient baits for schooling bass especially if they are aggressive.

I think I will have to pick a few up in shady colors, and bring them through schooling bass when they wont hit topwaters

Bill Siemantal designed the Spro Phat fly to do exactly what your looking for.

There is a big problem fishing a light hair jig at those depths. I'm talking 3/16oz. or less.  Aside from the fact that the jig will swing back toward you on the fall, even a slight breeze can move your presentation off its mark before it ever reaches the fish.  Used as a vertical presentation, they'd be a good choice, but for casting there are better options IMO

Yeah I love heavier hair jigs for schooling bass in deeper windier conditions but recently when I've been fishing bass are schooling in shallow 10 feet to 15 max and it's super slick with no wind and my normal lures I feel fish get too good of a look at.
