When to use a regular ribbon tail and thicker Cut'R style worm

Featured Replies

Is there any time, place, condition, or situation when using a regular thinner style ribbon or u tail worm would be better than something like a SK Cut'r worm or a Zoom UV Speed Worm that have a body more like a senko? I use the Cut'R worm when I throw worms and I have mixed results and I'm wondering if I should try some of the Culprit worms I have. These are on a texas rig fished around cover and grass and such.

If they want action throw a Cutter or Culprit.  Those two work great when you swim em. A thicker worm I always wacky rig.

When I need to slow down, I reach for a ribbon tail and I'll be working it on, or near the bottom. The Cutter, or Ultra-Vibe style worms I fish fast and weightless, normally well up in the water column.

I use a Magnum Speed Worm with 1/8 oz on top across scattered pads, through grassy flats in very warm water or when I know the big girls are cruising.

Pitch and swim a Cut R with a 3/16 around and in a weed line and over and through submerged grass

A Fat Max Ribbon Tail in stable cooler water after a front passes also with a 3/16

Do you use them like a fluke or more like a swimbait?

Without the tail the Cut'r is basically a stick bait so I kept one that the tail got ripped off on to wacky rig, but I think Neko rigging would be good with the tail?

I use CutR nearly every time out; never tried it weightless, but it should work.  I T-Rig or Rage-Rig (weighted hook with spriral keeper).  I'll finesse it through a laydown with 1/16 oz weight and drag it on deep points with 1/2 oz bullet...and anything in between.  Can be deadly swimming through pads or across top of mats.  Fish it like a senko....fish it like a grub....fish it like a jig.....can't fish it wrong.   And once you have tried all that, flip the tail up and try them all again.

The Cutter, or Ultra-Vibe style worms I fish very similar to a paddle tail swimbait, or right on top like a buzzbait over the weeds letting it fall into pockets and bringing it back on top.  The latter is a presentation I learned from a forum that is no longer around, and some of those members are here on BR.

Yes it would . You could fish it slow

Yamamoto Cut Tail was the original, Bass Assan I believe the original ribbon tails.

The traditional curl tail worm has a slower swimming motion then a Cut tail that is faster. Ribbon tails gives you a larger profile with less plastic and slowest tail swim motion.

I never thought about rage rigging a cut'r worm. Thats why I ask these questions!! Doing that would make it fall more horizontal and I can see how that would show the bass something different. I'm going to play around with them more and see what works and what fits my style.
