What is the reasoning behind the seating area being higher than the deck on some of these new boats ive been checking out? Seems like if you make a sharp turn you would fly out the boat, not to mention your up over the console catching all kind of wind....Nitro is one of them.

Can you post a picture of what you're talking about?  I'm not sure I understand your description.

I don't think the boat manufacturers intended for you to sit in the pedestal seats while the boat is underway with the big motor.

That's why I like my Jav...ur sittin' in it, not on it.

There should be a sticker on the boat warning you not to ride in the elevated seats while the boat is under power.

Same with my G3. The steering wheel is between my knees.

I'm kinda lost on what you're talking about.  This is a picture from Nitro's web site http://www.nitroboats.com/boat/?boat=3209 and it they seem to be sitting much lower than the decks to me.  Now, if you're talking about the pedistal seats on the decks, as others mentioned, those are fishing seats, not for riding down the lake.

Guess im alone on this one....It just seems like your setting up way too high in the Nitro. I sat in one at the Boat show in the Superdome this past weekend. Maybe im just use to setting low in my old 96 Skeeter. Just felt awkward to me.

I actually agree with you. Most of the newer boats are seated much higher. My buddies '08 Stratos is the same way. It's not too high. But a lot higher than I'd like to be. That's one of the many reasons I love older bass boats. My '87 Pro Craft has more of a 'cockpit' than a seat. You have to crawl in and hunker down.. and I LOVE that. More comfortable, less wind in your face, and it feels safer. Probably not safer but it makes you feel like it when you're not leaning out of the boat.

Fuel tanks mounted midship, under the seating area, cause the seating area to sit higher unless the hull design is a deeper V.

Unfortunately, those boats weren't made for saving your spine though.

Rick Clunn did a thing on TV recently demonstrating that having your butt down inside a boat with your legs sticking basically straight out was the worst way to go down a lake if it's rough. With an elevated seat position your legs are angled more downwards and are useful in helping absorb some of the shock of a boat hitting a wave. He suggested sitting on a seat cushion to raise yourself even more. With you butt flat you wind up taking all the wave straight up the lumbar and spine. A sure way to a sore back at the lake.
