Straight shank hooks

Featured Replies

I have a 5/0 Flippin hook straight  but I don’t have a 5/0 normal straight shank hook is there a difference?

Flipping hooks are larger diameter wire and usually shorter shank length then standard plastic worm hooks.

Would this be the right hook for a normal straight shank then? Hayabusa FPP Straight Shank Hook

or Roboworm Medium Wire Rebarb Hook

or do you mind listing a book I’m looking for 1/0-5/0

Gamakatsu #484 and Owner 5103 are very similar in length and wire diameter. Owner 5100 is a smaller wire dia, same length and round bend as 5103.

Suggest you look at Barlow’s Tackle for hook data.

Thank you, lastly how do these differ from offset worm hooks is it just a matter of opinion?

Mostly a matter of opinion, the offset holds the plastic somewhat better.

These Mustad hooks were called the Denny Brauer Flipping Hook. They are a thinner diameter that a "flipping/punch" hook but thicker than a finesse hook.

They are longer which puts the hook point farther back in the plastic.

The needle point penetrates faster than Gamakatsu or Owner.

Flipping is different than open water fishing.  The line is heavier with only a few feet between the lure and the end of the rod.  The fish often wraps itself around heavy cover making it often difficult to get a straight pull on the fish.  This makes getting a good hook set critical.  We have experimented with every kind of hook they make, from jigs to offset worm hooks.  From my experience, the best flipping hooks are short shank Aberdeen style hooks.  I have used the Denny Brauer flipping hook with great success.  My current favorite is the Owner Straight Worm Wide Gap 5103-131 in 3/0 and 4/0. These hooks are so sharp the hook will set from the weight of the fish alone. When you detect or suspect a strike when flipping, don't get into the habit of setting the hook on slack line or while still holding the line in your hand.  Reel up the slack and set the hook solidly.

With today's technology they should all do that if they don't throw em in the trash!

Of all the modern innovations in bass fishing, hooks have to be the greatest improvement.   Most young bass fishermen and gals don't know how truly bad our hooks were back in the day.  Hook setting was an athletic endeavor and even then the fish often weren't well hooked.  We would stretch out as far as possible and jerk the rod in a wide arch.  I actually fell out of the boat twice in the same morning setting a hook in Okeechobee.  Later, magazine authors wrote pages of copy about "quick flick of the wrist" hook sets and skin hooking baits.  Fish hooks are one thing that's better today than in the so-called olden days.  ?

The biggest improvement hook manufacturers made was switching metals used.

The old black Eagle Claw worm hook were worst for rolling the point. I spent some time throwing the Tru Turn, even the red hook.

Then Lonnie Stanley made a deal with Mustard to create first needle point round bend hook which Lonnie used in his jigs, spinnerbaits, & even a worm hooks.

FYI…if you don’t already know how to tie one, you might consider learning the snell knot for straight shank flipping hooks.  In my experience, the hook kick greatly improves my hook up percentage.
