Rods stay in that hard bent position when using with a downrigger, can/should I use any rod with a downrigger? What is the ideal action/power, basically what makes downrigger rods special and is it really that much better?

 

What rods might you recommend for stripers (think 8-25lb)? Don't mind coughing up for a nice one.

 

I have an 8 foot mod fast casting rod, any good?

The Talora series from Shimano has some really nice rods for downriggers.  

Composite or glass rod with a moderate or slow action, and appropriate power for whatever is likely to release the clip (or break the rubber band). That could be an Ugly Stik, or a custom job, and anything in between.
