New Shimano Metanium MGL and Bantam MGL free spool issue

Featured Replies

Excuse my ignorance, but I’ve got a brand new Metanium MGL B and a new Bantam MGL ….and I can’t get them to free spool much, just a few spool rotations….going to try playing with the brakes a bit….any suggestions if that doesn’t work? Can’t say I’ve had this with Daiwa or abu Garcia….not a huge deal and not knocking either reel….just trying to learn!

The brakes don’t affect free spooling much. The issue maybe the spool tension knob needs to be backed off.

I didn’t think so…will try the spool tension knob as well!

The bearings may also be over oiled.

None of my new shimanos free spool well. Should free up after a few uses.

I think it has something to do with the silent tune. On mine I loosened the spool tension knob all the way back then removed the spool. I then reinstalled it back in making sure it was in right then readjusted the spool tension. That fixed my 2020 Metaniums.

Every new Shimano I’ve bought has done the same thing now that I think of it

Will probably try this as well

Last night I was checking all my reels to see if any needed bearing cleaning. The Curado 70 MGL I got last fall barely spun at all with no brakes or spool tension.  So I took out the bearings and they had fair amount of grease on them and would not free spin at all. Soaked them overnight and they are much better but still not as good as I would like. Only spin for a few seconds.  All that matters is how well it performs though so I will test it out soon.  Surprised it was casting well the 5 times I used it last year but it was casting great so maybe they don't need to free spin as much as I think.  So before you worry so much I would get out and see how they cast.

Grease on the bearing....not good, light oil is.

Most likely this. I've had the same issue once, the reels have such tight tolerances. I backed the spool tension off and removed the spool and put it back together. Make sure the spool wiggles when the tension is loose if not remove and replace with tension backed off.

Highly doubt it's bad bearings, shimano uses d**n good bearings, my old greenies and chronarchs still have the original bearings that only get cleaned once a year.

Have you put line on it and used it yet or just spinning the spool in the living room? I used to see people do this in stores all the time. Click the thumb bar and spin away. Never understood what they were checking for.

The more I play around with them the more i think they're fine....will probably send up selling them pretty soon as i have bills piling up and prefer the feel of daiwa's baitcasters

I have found that they loosen up pretty quick.
