20 Metanium JDM handle replacement

Featured Replies

Hi!

I went on and bought a JDM Metanium for the first time, I read about the levers being smaller but I thought it wouldn't affect me as much... well it does.. I know some of you guys have bought the USDM handles and replace them

Could you please share the info on where you got it from??

Thanks!!

I get mine right from Shimano at https://fishshop.shimano.com/

I actually got the Curado K 200 XG handle on some of mine. It's slightly bigger than the XG Met at 96mm instead of 95mm. It's $15.80 for the whole assembly with power knobs vs $38.55 for the Metanium assembly. You'll just need the chrome end caps or "knob seals" since the Curado knobs come with black end caps.

Also, the Curado handle matches the Metanium body color better as well. If you purchased the 6.2 or 7.1 JDM Metanium you got the tiny 84mm handle. If you purchased the XG then you should have a 90mm but the knobs are still tiny and not the power grips.

Let me know if you need help with part numbers.

I know we’re referring to Shimano but any idea on contacting Daiwa for the same reason? I’ve tried calling the customer service number and I’ll be damned if I can get ahold of anyone. I know I can purchase Gomexus or other aftermarket but I’d prefer to stay with a Daiwa handle.

Try the tackle trap.  I know they sell handles.  Otherwise you have a bazillion options on the auction site or that chinease amazon site.

Don't forget the shims/washers under the bearing held by the screw to avoid any slop in the knobs.

I went for the metanium handle assembly, It was tempting to get the curado handle.

Handle off a Curado 150mgl is perfect match on Met already has chrome endcaps, $23 on fishshop shimano.

Could you please share the part numbers you used for the curado handles?? I bought the metanium ones but they don't have the oversize knobs. I really like the knobs on my curado 150mgl. I have the XG metanium and would like the large handle with the oversize knobs.

Thanks!

Sorry, I guess I was a little imprecise in my response.  I have ordered shimano parts for my aldebarans directly from shimano but I haven't had occasion to order curado or metanium parts.  You should call or email the shimano folks to get an exploded view diagram and part number list for your specific reel or just ask them for the part number of the component[s] you need.  In the case of Daiwa, they were kind enough to email me the diagram and part number document for my specific reel so I was able to order that way.

The 2020 Metanium, Curado MGL 150 and the Curado 200 K all use the exact same big power grip knobs. So if you ordered the handle assembly it should have came with the shank, knobs, bearings/seals and end caps. They sale the whole assembly or everything individually. What exactly did you order? Left or right handed?

Also, Shimano will accept returns or exchanges on anything you ordered from them.

I order the metanium XG assembly, It is wider but the knobs are same ones the reel came with from japan. thats why I rather go for the curado ones. thanks for the tip on the return I will send it back.

its for a right handed reel

That's not possible unless someone swapped them out. The Curado and the Metanium B both use the exact same part number knobs!

If you're wanting the handle assembly from the Curado 150 MGL the part number is BNT6906. You will also need the handle nut plate cover which is part number BNT6914.

If you want the Curado 200 K assembly then you want part number BNT5686 and your Metanium nut cover should fit on it.

Remember though that the Curado 200k assembly comes with black knob end caps. If you want the chrome Metanium ones you'll need 2 of part number BNT5840 also.

Jdm metaniums have thinner knobs than usdm reels.  Ok never mind I see now maybe he bought a usdm handle without knobs?

He's saying he ordered the USDM XG whole assembly which should have came with the power grip knobs included.

Shimano doesn't even offer the JDM knobs for the Metanium on their page. However, they are the same ones as the Curado 70 MGL uses.

No did bought the assembly with the knobs, but while is wider at the 95mm the knobs are exactly the the same as the JDM. I'll take a picture today after work.

Will the USDM knobs fit the JDM handle? I don't mind the 90mm handle but the knobs are a bit small.

Yes they will. Most Shimano knobs will fit all handles across the board with a couple exceptions.

Remember though, you only get the 90mm handle on the XG JDM model. The regular or HG models come with tiny 84mm handles.

And remember to transfer the thin metal washers found under the bearing that's held in by the knob screw. Otherwise you will have up and down slop in the knobs.
