Hubs Chub Rattle-Lure

A friend showed me this bait recently. He picked up a new old stock Hubs Chub Rattle Lure in a green shad finish.             I'd heard of this old bait, but have never seen one before. Large, approx 4" long single tail prop top water, with a slant cut face. Very good quality, and nice paint finish.                                                   The closest I've seen to this bait is a Dalton Special, similar in size and shape.               These were endorsed by Billy Westmoreland years ago. Has anyone ever fished these baits, or do you currently use one?

I have half a dozen or more. The original wooden baits (Hub's Chub - a shallow crankbait with a metal lip) were made right here in Indiana in the late 1950s by Warren Hubbard. He also created the Sparkle tail lure, his best seller. The topwater version (Rattalur) shown in the pic came along much later (1970s) and with a different company owner, as the company changed hands at least 4 times in those early years. That topwater came in two sizes. The one in the pic is the smaller version. It is nearly identical to a Florida lure called the "Johnny Rattler" made by Rhoden Enterprises. Last time I looked, you could still find Rattalurs (newest version) available online.

I think I have one of theses, never used it,  the previous property owner died and I found his tackle box in the shed.
The notches side reminded me of it.

I've got quite a few of the Hub's Chub Rattalurs in the large size. I can vouch that they are an exceptional topwater lure. I always carry several with me. I've had most luck on the solid black, gold, or shad colors. I've caught largemouths up to 8 pounds on these in the early spring when fish are just moving up.

For some reason they have been particularly productive on Henderson Lake in south Louisiana. In fact there were a few  tournaments on this lake years ago where the only thing you could use were Rattalurs.

If you can find any I recommend giving them a try.
