Smith Mountain Lake VA?

Featured Replies

Hope this is the right place to ask.
I am going to be up at Smith Mtn Lake soon.

Anyone near there have some tips on lures etc?

Thank you in advance.

I'd give you advice, but every time I make the trip from Richmond I fish for rockfish/stripers/striped bass.

That's ok, I want to catch what I can while I am there.

I will be doing bank fishing, all of the charters I saw were a little or a lot out of my price range.

went there once for a week in august on a little aluminum boat with 5hp motor. I was on the main finger about 1/2 way up  and it was tough. The bites/fish I did get were decent and came around rip rap and docks on points. Id say just about every fish came on a shaky head with 10" worm in either white or purple.

I hear down on the lower finger around Bull Run is the better finger for bass but I cant really say much other than that.

EDIT: The reason for that if I remember right is bull run had more grass. I couldnt find a lick of grass up in the area I was at.

Spent a long weekend there quite a few summers ago.  Rented a boat with a trolling motor from Parrot Cove.  Not like having a guide, but you will get off the bank.  Tips?  No.  Most memorable fishing things were losing an entire A-Rig on its maiden cast, and encounters with a couple rude, encroaching glitter rocket jack-wagons.  Bass were caught, but not in size or numbers worth talking about

Almost any one if the 30 will work fine. Get the plastic to stand a little.  More important is the rest of it... the generally thinner baits, fished slow or real slow, maintaining bottom contact.  Don't sweat the hook/head details.  Sweat the patience and concentration part and you'll do fine.
