10 ft Jon boat on the Delta

Featured Replies

Would a 10 footer have problems on the delta? the wind, waves and crowd

I got the boat from a friend for a cheap price. I have some reservations.

It really depends on where you go.  In general I wouldn’t feel comfortable in something that small on the Delta.  The only place I would use that would be in an area like Discovery Bay where you have some protection from the wind as well as a no wake zone

The isolated sloughs are OK, otherwise use your common sense and away from the main rivers and open water areas.

Nope.

By nope.   I mean I wouldn’t do it.  you would most likely have issues with any chop in the water.   But that’s my opinion.

That is why I posted here. I want to hear from the anglers. I appreciate your honesty. Thank you. I will have to reconsider or find a really isolated area, small area, really small area to try it.

I kayak the delta and yea. I would totally take a 10 foot Jon boat on the delta.  With homework you can find water boats don’t want to enter. There is one spot I have to lower my kayak to the water down stairs.   I’ve seen one boat there and he was nervous as heck.

the delta is almost “All waters”. Lake like sections. All the way to super skinny waters.   Water I only see bank fisherman as I slip by.   I’ve been in sections so big I’m the nervous one.  Some channels are narrow but deep enough for yachts to go by. Those suck.

google earth is my friend.  The trick is to find a place to get your boat to water.  And figure out some anchor. Wind and current takes some thought. I just go with the flow.

I would like to add that Discovery Bay is downright scary in the wind.  it whips thru there.
