Should I replace my Tempest with a Fury?

What benefits would I get, if any?  This would be on my Z22 w a 300 Mercury Racing Motor.

Didn't you just spend some cash repairing that thing?

First, why are you looking to change? Second, what kind of #'s are you getting now with the Tempest?

I did just repair it.  I've come to realize that I should have a 2nd prop just in case something like that happens again.

I'm not into top end speed.  I prefer better whole shot than top end speed.  I'm more than happy cruising along at 55-60 in my boat, which it does just fine with the current set up.

The Fury should give you a better hole shot and a little more lift.

If you run in rough water, you might want to consider a 4 blade like a Trophy+ .... you will lose a few mph, but will gain a bunch in hole shot and overall handling.

Here on Kentucky Lake, we deal with rough water constantly and I run a Trophy+ on my 520. Like night and day over a three blade ....

X2 on the Trophy four blade. i run it when i know it's going to be rough and i have a load in the boat. In the winter if it's just me i can get away with my Lazer II 25P, but run a 23P tempest in the warmer months.

Trophy gives me a little more bow lift and hole shot. The Lazer II 25P gives me more top end, and the 23P Tempest is just a good all around prop for my boat.

Every boat, load, and water/weather conditions require different setups though.

Good luck

I considered the same prop for my 20' Champion and was told the fury does not work  quite as well on the heavy boats as the tempest plus. But there are no absolutes with props.

Is there a dealer in your area that has loaner props? A friend of mine borrowed a fury from a local dealer and ended up buying the loaner at a very good price. Just a thought......................Al

I have a Trophy Plus as a spare. They are good props as far as what they can do for the boat and they are speed props but there's always a chance that you'll sling a blade on a Trophy. It's a known problem with them....they are thin. I cracked 2 Trophy's last year myself. Luckily the blades didnt come all the way off and blow up my lower unit.

Try a Bravo1. You'll need to get PVS holes drilled but it's the best 'fishing' prop I've ever used. Not quite as fast as a Trophy on top end but it's a bigger diameter (15 1/4) and the handling with the Bravo1 is incredible. I run a 28p Bravo1, dual PVS holes on my Gambler with the 250XB.

I dont think he will have any trouble cracking blades on Ranger I have only seen trophy crack on the high performance hauls that run there lower units close to the bottom of the pad   I run mine 1inch above the pad most Rangers are around 4inch bellow with it being that low he will never surface that prop

Redline,

I have a buddy of mine that runs his Stratos w/250xs with Fury, Trophy, Powertech TRO4, and on and on.  For his setup the best top end was with a 26" Fury, best hole shot was with the TR04, while maintaining recommend RPMs.  It will vary from boat to boat and your setup.  I run a TRO4 on my Ranger since I am a fan of a hole shot and handling, also Rangers are hefty and a 4 blade really helps with holeshot and mid range performance.

What's your current setup?

Inches Below Pad

(Ranger hulls are usually from 3-4" below pad)

RPMs at WOT and light load

(Should be right a Redline plus or minus 200 RPMs)

Time to 30 MPH (Hopefully better than 4s)

Prop Slip < 12% is ideal

This sight will help you calculate prop slip

You should be running right at your redline RPM with the prop you chose at WOT for best performance and its always better to be under-proped by a couple of hundred rpms vs. over-proped especially if you like making that Ranger jump out like a flushing teal.

If it were me  I would get a 4 blade and have it blueprinted and tuned.  The TRO4s are priced at about $320 at www.pitstopmarine.com which is a great price for a great prop.

The other advantage of a 4 blade is when running really shallow on a jackplate, don't want to run like that all the time but it is great to know that you can jack the motor up and get out of the shallows.
