I’ve got a three yr. old 9” Garmin Echomap UHD.  A friend insists all I need to do to change it to a Panoptics  Livescope system is purchase the latest Panoptics transducer, about $450, instead of purchasing the entire Panoptics system, which runs about $1,200.  I know very little about the Livescope, but is he correct?

I believe you also have to have the black box in addition to the LVS32 Transducer. The GPS store website can answer your questions much better than myself.

For the UHD's you'll need the black box as well so it'd be about $1,200 to upgrade. For that price, there were a few packaged deals out there with the older LVS 32 livescope transducer where you could get the whole system including transducer, black box, and another Echomap UHD 93sv for $1,700

ALL of the Garmin head units require the use of the black box (GLS10) along with either the LVS32 (old) or the LVS34 (new) transducers. The box is the same for either. The 34 is an improvement of about 30% distance and target separation clarity, reduced ghost tree and dead spots. The 32 and box was on sale before Christmas for just under a thousand. You may be able to find them for that still. There are a lot of used 32 transducers for sale (from people who just bought a new 34 transducer) for an average of 300 that can be added to a new black box that cost 500 (total 800). Almost forgot that there is also a LVS62XR for deep or extended range, but it won't have the detail that most inshore fisherman want.

So to answer the above are correct for the LVS 32 and 34 transducers. Believe they have a port to run the LV24 transducer.  The 32 and 34 both need the GLS 10 to operate that require the network connection on the back.  But the plug and play transducer isn't the higher quality "livescope" system panoptix is running now with high resolution.
