lowe 16' jon boat

Featured Replies

ok so a guy stopped by today and was inquiring about sandblasting prices. he wanted to get his boat trailer sandblasted, which is fine we quoted him a price and i proceeded to ask him about the boat that was on the trailer. its a 16' lowe boat thats been gutted. he was taking it to the scrap yard. he plans on getting a smaller boat. so i told him to just leave the boat with me and we'll blast his trailer for a lesser amount than quoted (quoted price $250). scrap yard was going to give him $100 so i told him we'll knock that off the cost. the thing is gutted, he said there or no leaks other than a little seepage in the back end, its going to take some doing to get it going again, but i think it will be worth it,all the original metal framing is still in the boat, it had a steering column, but i don't think i'm going to put one back in they're just too costly, but my questions to you guys are pretty simple, does it sound like it's worth fixing??? and does anyone have any good ideas on how to approach it.

Looks like a great project! One question though, do you have the title or can you get one? I wouldn't put much effort into it until you have that.

Patching any leaks would be number one with it gutted like this. I've seen guys fill the inside of the boat with water then mark and fix the leaks. Now would be a great time to run wires for trolling motor, depth finder, running lights, etc. Then I would get some marine plywood or aluminum and fix the back deck and lids. After that you're left with installing carpet, adding accessories and going fishing.

Search on here and you'll find some helpful information. Here is one to get you started.

As long as you have the title, I think it will definitely be worth restoring. Best of luck!

Would it be worth it to get is spayed with a spray on bedliner?  That way you dont have to deal with plywood and carpet?

Excellent suggestion! A spray in liner is on the list for the floor of my Lowe for this spring. Personally I like having carpet on the decks but that is really just a personal preference.

Hope you don't fish in the summer.  That bedliner is going to be uncomfortable.

You mean hot?  I think I can get it in white...

yeah i have the title for it.  it was great how it all went down, i couldn't have asked for anything better.  gives me something to do in my free time.   spray on liner does sound like a good idea,  i really like grizzly boat because of their bearhide bottoms.  what's wrong with liners in the summer???  and filling it up is my first priority for sure.  i did that with my lil jon boat when i first got it, but that thing was much simpler and smaller.  i can still run a bilge pump and all the aeration i need if i mount my switches in an accessible place.  i cant wait to get started on this thing

I fished out of a boat with the spray in liner last summer when the temps were in the mid 90s and the floor was MUCH cooler than bare aluminum, but no not as comfortable as carpet in general.

And congratulations Punkinseed! We'll be looking forward to seeing this thing progress.

I thought bedliners only came in black.....

I thought bedliners only came in black.....

My mom owns a truck accessory store and she does spray on's.  She doesn't do color anymore because she had to much trouble with it (fading ect..) but can get it in small barrels if someone wants it.

Hmmm   wonder what color white fades to?

If it's like most whites, it "fades" to yellow.

She sure doesn't...  I keep on telling her she should sell stuff online but she wont listen.  She couldn't sell the spray anyway, she does that at the shop and cant just sell the barrels...  Good luck to you!  If you do get a spray on make sure you get a high pressure spray.

Looks like a good project to me.

Wish I had access to sanblasting equipment. Blast the crap out of it, prime and paint your favorite color, and possibly line the inside with the white bedliner as others have suggested. Perfect rig for smaller waters.

Fading from white to yellow? Wouldn't be an issue for me as it's the bottom of a john boat, not a 50,000 Triton.

Good luck!
