Hey guys..

I would like to get a fish finder for on the front of my boat.. I have a question though...  how cheap of a fishfinder can i get that will actually show my bait in the water when I am drop shotting?  I have read that you can see your bait and actually see a fish swim up to it and take it..  how cheap could I find one of these for, or will any gps nowadays do it?  I know that my current old hummingbird is only good for depth and water temp..

Vexilar will be the least expensive. Otherwise you're probably looking at 1-3 grand for an HD unit

You don't need to spend 1 - 3 grand to see your drop shot! I can pick it up on my Garman on the bow. You just have to make sure you are in the cone angle and you have to play with your sen. alittle.

My boat is in storage but I have had it for along time,I think it is a Garman 340.It is a good unit. I am going to buy the Humminbird 898 this year! OH my wife is going to KILL me!

I have a humminbird PiranhaMax 170 and it can do that just fine.

I had a Lowrance X52 upfront and now have a LMS520C, both outdated by todays HD standards.   I could/can see my bait with either of them (even with a light drop shot).

You just have to play with your unit. Turn your sen. up or down and watch your screen to find your drop shot rig.

There are many thing to consider when trying to see your lure on a FF. The two major ones are water depth and the cone angle of the depth finder. if you are in 10 feet of water and your cone angle is 20° the circle you can see on the bottom is only 3' on the bottom. If you are in 20 feet of water you are only seeing 6 or 7' of the bottom. if you lure is not in that cone you wont see it.

One quick question though, what about units that have DSI or DI. Can you see your lure with Down Scan Imaging? Or, is this something that only the older type sonars can show?

I am sure am not a expert when it comes down to SI and DI. Think Wayne has to answer this one. But if I were a betting man I would think so.
