cabelas agm battery vs. the competition

Featured Replies

Just was looking at the agm batteries from cabelas.  The get pretty good reviews based on cabelas website cutomer reviews.

I currently have a interstate mega tron marine rv deep cycle battery.  The numbers on it are as follows:

srm 27

600 cca

750 mca

spr

How does my current battery compare to cabelas agm batteries in quality?  Longevity?  etc.

Also, I noticed on cabelas website that the agm 24 and 27 series are nearly identical in performance but there is a 10 pound weight difference!

Would there be any reason to go with the bigger battery?

I realize there are probably better batteries out there than both of these brand (like Trojan, etc.).  But for the amount that I fish, I am more interested in an affordable lower maintenance battery (thus the interest in cabelas AGM series).

Please chime in with your thoughts....especially if you have some knowledge in the battery arena!

Do a check outside the Cabela's review pages as they could be plants. Check out Sears as their AGM batteries are made by Odyssey the same company that sponsors Shaw Grigsby. Odyssey/Sears Batteries are high end though but have a 3 year warranty will out last any flooded wet cell battery.

I had a couple Cabela's AGM batteries, I was not impressed as they didn't last long and didn't seem to hold a charge any better than the everstart maxx batteries I use now.

Yeah, I have had no issue with my interstate battery.  It has performed well.  I am debating on just waiting on the battery upgrade.  Right now I have a 55# motorguide digital on the bow...which is fine for bass fishing.  I want to upgrade to at least an 80 pound trolling motor because I would like to do some walleye fishing (vertical jigging) on the detroit  river.  When fishing on the river, you have to have enough power to keep your jigs vertical...which is going to require at least two batteries and an 80 pounder, if not more on the bow of my crestliner 1850 fishhawk.  The above upgrades are going to cost me considerably more than I want to spend this year.

I just thought that maybe, just maybe if I bought 2 new batteries that I would extend my runtime on high power and that the boat would be able to "hang" on that swift of current.  Probably a stretch to think that my size boat could keep jigs vertical with a 55 pound 12 volt on the bow!

I may just have to save for another year and deal with the dilemma next year.

Thanks for your input guys.

A 80lb 24v trolling motor using 2 group 27 batteries will last twice as long as a 12v unit using 1 group 27 size battery not to mention more thrust in current. If your going to upgrade to a 24v buy new batteries don't mix 1 old battery with 1 new one.
