Boat mooring ?

Featured Replies

My family will be taking a camping trip to Kerr lake this summer.  I just got a new to me Bass Tracker PT 175.  In the past I have just drug my jon boat up to the bank. With this boat I will be mooring it off of the camp site.  My question is how much weight will I need on the moors  and what is the best material to do this with? I didn't know if I could use cinderblocks or if I needed like 50 pound anchors to do this with.

Mooring?  Have you ever seen the size of the mooring blocks they use for small boats?  They weigh several hundred pounds.  Of course, they are designed to stay put in strong running currents/tides and storms.

Years ago, some folks used old car engines for mooring anchors.  While it's not likely you'll actually need such a secure mooring, you never know.  Also, check with your insurance company.  There may be something in the fine print about leaving the boat in the water.

It all depends on how sheltered the water is at your camp site.  If at all practical, I'd consider setting an anchor off the beach, and secure the boat bow to the anchor with another line securing the stern to a tree or secure post.

Which type of anchor depends on the type of bottom.

If you're trailering your boat, and have any doubts, why not put it on the trailer at the end of the day?  Leave it in the water during the day, where you can keep an eye on it and the weather, and haul out each evening.

I'd sleep better at night knowing my boat was secure.

They make a mooring stake out of PVC pipe that you basically screw into the ground in the lakes of northern Mi. Especially for the party coves.

However, Rhino is correct, why not trailer it up?  It only takes 5 minutes and your boat is absolutely secure.  If its a matter of not having a ramp or you are in a remote location then I have also seen (and done) beach the boat and tie it off to a tree

Beach it.  All you dont need is a big storm to make waves big enough to "walk" your boat out a few hundred yards.
