Copolymer for drop shot

Featured Replies

What’s the disadvantage of using staight copolymer for a drop shot. I don’t drop shot a ton but I hate retying leaders when I’m broke off

Line memory and some loss of sensitivity, in my opinion. I prefer braid to long leader when using spinning gear.

I've been using 6lb Silver Thread Copoly drop shotting for nearly 20 years. I do braid to leader everywhere else, however. (I don't tie leader knots in the boat very well-and by the time I'm done the boat is 100 yards from where I started)

Rod & reel you use?

I have drop shot and slip shot using 5# Maxima Ultra Green copolymer line for over 40 years using Spinning tackle. 1 knot is 100% better then 2 knots using a leader.

Down side is you need to manage your line and untwist it after each outing. My method was cutting everything off the line and dragging the line behind my boat a few hundred yours before putting the boat on the trailer, never had any line twist issue.

PS, 5# UG has stronger knot strength then 8# FC.

My “pond” rod has 6lb Izorline XXX copolymer on it - caught a lot of dropshot fish on it over the years.

Honestly, I’ve done away with the leaders and fish straight 8lb braid on my main DS rod.

I use 6 lbs fluro for my dropshot setup.

There is some line twist but just have to know how to manage it.

I think fluro is more sensitive than copolymer or mono.

Also to me, better slack line sensitivity than braid and less knots than braid to leader.

Line twist is one annoying 'feature' of co-polymer and other 'clear' lines. Braid has it's own 'features' (like the time it takes to tie on a new leader and wind knots), but I have chosen to live with those.

My other reason for using braid instead is that I can mow through a lot of line at times when dropshotting. If I am tying a new leader on anywhere from 0 to 3 times a day, it's much more preferable to me to only lose a foot or so of the mainline tying on a new leader rather than ten or more feet of main line.
