Fall fishing for largemouth bass in Massachusetts

Recommended Posts

While we don't get as many as the big trophies you guys in Florida and the south get, we get the the pre winter aggression up in the north.  I went to my favorite stream today and caught 8 bass in an hour and a half.  I was feeling lazy so I bought shiners and just used a bobber and shiner so I knew I was going to catch more than whatever lure I tried.  Smallest one was exactly a pound and the biggest one was almost 1 pound 14 ounces.  Nothing crazy, but I just love the aggression these bass get when trying to get ready for the winter.

When the fall bite is on it can be crazy. Days when the wind is blowing and they're in that fall feed mode can be the best if the year. Fishing around the remaining green vegetation can be key, or windblown shores. Some of the best fishing can be had after everyone on the lake has already pulled their boats.

So they say… but I’ve never found the fall bite to be strong. This was my first year with a boat and I had high hopes of cleaning up this fall, but it hasn’t happened. My boat is still ready for action tho, so there’s still a chance.

Welcome to the forum.  Yes, this time of year can be great around here.

Hang on to this thread:

It's full of info from us 'locals' about local waters.

It can be very hit or miss, if you're on them you can clean house, but the fish move around a lot and can get very focussed on certain bait. One lake I fish a lot has landlocked Alewives that school up and the fish can get very keyed in on them. If you find them it can be fish and fish cast after cast but if you're not on them it's a lot of empty water.
