St Croix Avid -- M or ML?

Featured Replies

  • Super User

So I'm considering upgrading one of my spinning rods to a St Croix Avid.  This rod will be used for split-shotting, drop-shotting, jighead + worm, etc.

Would you folks recommend the ML or M Avid for this?  Going by the recommended lure weights, ML seems like a better candidate, but the M doesn't seem that heavy either.

Thanks!

Chris at Tech,

I just finished a St.Croix 2S70MF Premier blank for a customer that is using it for a DS, SS, rod. The rod has a split grip with a 10" span from the fighting butt to the up-locking 16MM reel seat center. The reel it was made for is an E20PTi, feels really nice and has a lot of sensitivity to it.

I'll bet the Avid in the Medium power Fast action will do the jobs you are looking for it to do.

Tight Lines!!!

I think the ML would be a better choice for split shotting and drop shotting, whereas the Medium power might work better for general 'worming'.  The ML compares to a Medium power Loomis, and the Medium St. Croix is comparable to MH Loomis (as a basis for comparison). I generally prefer casting rods when stepping up above a ML St. Croix.

I've got the Avid 6'9" ML power XF action that is dubbed their 'drop shot' rod. I love this rod- it has a limber tip coupled with plenty of backbone. I use it for shakey heads more than drop-shotting, but it is great for either technique. I don't split shot very much, but I imagine it would perform great if you used it for that technique. I also own an Avid 6' medium power fast action rod, and I use it for skipping docks and jerkbaits. It is too stiff for drop-shotting IMHO; you need a limber tip for proper presentation. So I'll say get the 6'9" ML XF...it is a popular rod for builders over on another site if that tells you anything. This rod also comes in the Legend Tournament line.

i have a med avid 6ft3 i use for worming ..... the blank is just that strong .... now when i need a liter aplication i have a 6ft3 legened elite med-lite and have had no troubles .... id say go with the med-lite ,,, the med may be just to beefy

I agree with the ML.  the medium would be fine for the splitshot rig but I think a tad too stiff for dropshot.

On a ML avid If they make an XF tip that would be ideal.
