You can kayak the Castiac Lagoon. Stone Canyon is in the area, check before you go out there. Hollywood Reservoir is there too.  You can try fishing in Marina Del Rey. Find a charter for some deep sea stuff.

We don’t have a lot of public bass fishing small lakes within a few miles where you are located.

The Long Beach Federal Breakwall is 7 miles long and fishable inside is safer with a kayak or the outside near the ends.

The wall is basically a free standing dam made of rip rap rocks about 300’ wide at the bottom in 45’ of water with 30 to 45 degree tapering upwards.

Take a look at this weeks BR home page article showing a bright red/orange chatterbait, perfect for the Breakwall’s  calico and sand bass. Another choice would be lime green for fishing anywhere along out coast bays and marina’s.

The Qween Mary rip rap wall Long Beach harbor is another good Calico and Sand Bass spot.

Fresh water Bass fishing you need to travel 1 to 2 hours, take a look at Western Outdoor News weekly fishing paper that list  nearly every lake in SoCal for bass fishing reports.

Lake Castiac afterbay (Lagoon) would be my 1st choice kayak fishing.

Welcome to BR!

Tom

Echo Park can have an ok frog bite if you get there super early in the morning before all the crowds of walkers, joggers, etc. show up.

And I say before "all the crowds" because you need to be very aware of the people around you or you will hit someone in the face with your lure. Or if you set the hook hard and the frog, or other lure, goes flying behind you and nails someone.

Hollywood Reservoir? Last time I checked, Hollywood Reservoir was off limits/not fishable just like Lake Mathews. I have always wanted to try and fish it ever since I saw it on Google Maps a few years ago.

With that said, can anyone confirm if you can actually 'legally' fish in Hollywood Reservoir? If it just so happens that you can fish it legally, I want to try and hit it up now. On the other hand, if no one can confirm, I don't want to try and fish it and possibly get a trespassing ticket.

My understanding is: "NO", not legally. But, I could be wrong.

I know folks that may have tried. . . . . possibly using clandestine gear made by Ronco, and they may or may not have fiddled around and found out, LOL.

This thread is long in the tooth now and the OP probably moved on.

I cautioning anyone looking at Google Sat seeing lakes in SoCal suggesting they are open to the public, most are not.

The MWD water storage system owns several nice lakes closed to entry. These lakes are water storage reservoirs serving local cites a few are privately owned.

I know of no lakes in the Santa Monica mountains open to the public including lakes Sherwood and West Lake.

As noted Western Outdoor News is weekly published with a listing of all SoCal lakes fishing reports is a good resource.

Compton has a pond called Magic Johnson park. It's not known for big fish, likely cuz some people keep taking big ones home, but you can get away with downsized lure or even micro bait for ultralight/bfs. The problem with bringing ultralight is simply when fishing post lunch time - winds around that area pick up quickly west to east.

Legg lake/whittier narrows is another one people haven't mentioned here. They were supposed to be big fish but summertime they seem to reside on the most inner parts of the three lakes.

Kenneth hahn park has a small clear water pond usually fished more for trout. Years ago, there used to be bass as well, but i haven't been there for so long and recent youtube seaches (people love to vlog) don't have people fished there recently.

Balboa lake at Van Nuys harbors the biggest fish i know you can easily reach easily. However, this might be the most pressured water body i have ever seen fishing here so far. Many videos on YT showing they caught 3 to 7 pounders here, from ultralight all the way to big baits, but just like the echo park post earlier, you have to go during down time otherwise you'll end up finessing. Catfish and placos are easily found here.
